Shugo has lived a relatively peaceful and happy life. The greatest trauma to his childhood was learning that he couldn't find all of the books he wanted to read in the Light Domain. Devastated, he made the long journey to the Arcane Domain simply to expand his reading selection... then realized, once he was there, that he had not factored in the question of "where he would live."

As it turned out, living in an igloo-like structure made of books was not a very practical approach. Actually, he got laughed at quite loudly by the pinkette who found him trying to pull this off. Satou invited him back to her newly established Arcane clan, the "Kuronekos," and gave him ample lair space for his book collection.

As they got to know one another more, Shugo admitted that he read books to escape the fact that he was a pretty pitiful fighter: He could not live the radiant and exciting lives others did, so simply sponged off their written accounts. This would have perhaps made for a touching and adorable character quirk. It would have been easy to giggle at him and let him keep reading. But as Shugo soon learned, Satou never did things the easy way: She slammed his book down, grabbed him tightly, and dragged him off on an adventure with her.

Since then, Shugo's reason for reading has changed entirely. He now actively explores the world around him and discovers things on his own, rather than just reading other dragons' discoveries. In fact, he now takes what others have learned and combines it with his own research as he studies medicine and healing. Reading is also more of a relaxation tool to unwind after going on real life adventures. He may whine and complain a lot about how pushy she is, but Shugo has never once regretted letting Satou drag him about. In fact, by all accounts, he is actually quite smitten with her and loves her more dearly than anyone else.
