Valkyrie is a strange dragon, and one almost avoided by the shattered remnants of the once great Clan Echecs for the tendency she has of dredging up memories unwanted, as if by magic. Like a ghost in the night, the pale then-hatchling crept into the vast and empty lair, drawn to the almost tangible sorrow in the air like a moth to a flame. Perhaps she knew that it was a result of the remaining members of the clan lamenting the loss of so many, and Valkyrie has been a permanent fixture in the Echecs Glade ever since, no-one really having the heart to tell her to leave. For all her morbid fascination with death, Valkyrie is surprisingly sympathetic with those aching from the loss of loved ones. She listens to any tales that they might be willing to tell her, prodding at wounds of the heart yet unhealed, and yet after absorbing every word of these tragic tales she weaves a great tale of what the afterlife has in store for them. Iizlom, of all dragons, sometimes seeks Valkyrie's company, telling the ghostly Skydancer of the days before the Great Plague. Of the days she would spend fighting side-by-side with Vulriik before he sought a higher purpose, of the glorious battle between the children of the Plaguebringer and the children of the Lightweaver, and of the many sleepless nights she would spend planning tactics with Pristro before the plague claimed him. Being the one to be able to draw out such tales, as well as being able to put a brighter spin on an otherwise grim event, Valkyrie is the self-proclaimed lorekeeper of the clan. Her own little corner of the vast lair is littered with more glowing mushrooms than is strictly necessary, giving her enough light by which to write on lengthy scrolls in her elegant sloping script. The pockmarked stone by which she sleeps holds hundreds of scrolls, detailing the lives, and more often deaths, of each and every dragon that was once part of Clan Echecs, right down to those that were long forgotten. Each scroll is named and closely guarded, Valkyrie seems to value these more than her own life and would willingly die to protect the true history she has gathered by her strange magics and word of mouth. Her history is one shrouded in mystery, and her arrival in Clan Echecs perhaps more so. When asked, Valkyrie merely shrugs and says she has told all there is to be said, and returns to sorting, writing or reading the many, many scrolls of history in her care. In truth, not even Valkyrie herself knows her origins, although she speculates that it may have something to do with ghosts or spirits leading her there, or perhaps that she is closer to them than she thinks even though her heart still beats. Valkyrie has few true friends within the clan, but she enjoys the company of Schatten and Vogel, the two underworld spirits from the Island of Prufrock, even if she's starting to get tired of Vogel asking about a death that never happened. Still, she finds their presence oddly comforting, and talks to them often about what she has documented about the clan's past. When Zero took over, Schatten and Vogel fled back to the place of their birth in the hopes of finding some measure of peace. With their departure, Valkyrie was more or less left in solitude, the only ones who found her deathly aura welcoming gone. For a while, this suited Valkyrie just fine, after the beginning of the Chessmaster's Divide heralded the end of lives that she was duty-bound to document. The silence and loneliness soon became crushing. She couldn't choose a side because to do so would be to bias her historical documents, and yet as the rift in Clan Echecs grew she found that to remain neutral was to forsake the protection of the resistance, and to forsake protection was to die. As such, she has chosen to resist Zero's rule, though she takes no part in the war. |
