“... While many would contest that in our civilized world that slavery has been outright abolished, the harrowing fact is that draconic enslavement is a practice that continues into our modern day. Pockets of dragons in isolated, harsh regions of Sornieth have retained their servants, justifying their continued ownership of their brothers as being a necessary way of life. This is especially true in more industrious territories such as Fire and Lightning, where manual labor is in high demand. Despite being frowned upon by kin higher up the chain of command and condemned by religious leaders, these two nations harbor quite a few desperate or greedy characters who think nothing of forcing fellow dragons to mine, build, and toil.
“More common than dragons enslaving dragons, however, is the act of beast enslaving dragon. This is usually carried out by Talonok tribes who, despite their small stature, harbor great numbers and power. The most common method they use to acquire their living contraband is through egg robbery, typically by distracting or incapacitating a draconic parent through trickery or deceit before swooping in and making off with unhatched eggs. These eggs are then marketed off to the highest bidder, even occasionally falling into the hands of less reputable dragon clans, though they most often end up in the clutches of fellow beastfolk. “Again, instances of Talonok-enslaved dragons is most common in Fire and Lightning territories, though they do occasionally extend to less habitable regions of Dragonhome and the Abiding Boneyard. In these inhospitable wastes where most Talonok dare not tread, they are dependent on their dragon servants, who are far more capable of making the land livable due to their elemental powers…”

"She, uh, she’s not a fan of most of our Beast Clan allies, to say the very least. I'd probably be suspicious, too, if I were her. It does make it a bit awkward, though, since The Aimless are right next door and you can’t dodge the Ta’Angrel harpies on the way out of the canyon. And the Ald Hoef are always hanging around. I mean, really, Irthskaar probably isn’t the best place for her, but you really can’t tell her that.
“She’s getting better, though? I think? She’s been talking more. She actually has a job now, granted it’s as a day laborer. I know that can’t bring back pleasant memories after spending so long working in a mine, but Sitael is a good boss and maybe he’ll help her out. Or maybe she’ll eat him. It’s really a toss-up.” |

HISTORY
Athena never knew her parents, having been stolen as an egg by Talonok slavers living in the Ashfall Wastes. She was hatched and reared with the purpose of mining in the Beast Clan infested mountains southwest of the Great Furnace, digging up ore to be used for Talona's war efforts. Alongside a team of other kidnapped dragons, she knew nothing aside from work and pain, struggling to keep up with the ever-increasing demands of her masters.
Her one solace was Sorrow, a tribal dragon captured at an older age and aware of life beyond servitude. He told her stories about freedom and the Flamecaller, and always seemed to hint that there would come a day when the goddess would rescue them both from their binds. It was a prediction that proved right when a volcanic eruption provided enough of a distraction for them to flee. Together, they ran to Dragonhome, in hopes the inhospitable deserts would dissuade the Talonok from pursuing them. Athena is a quiet and unfriendly dragon, heavily scarred by her past and socially maladjusted. Like her fellow Beast-raised dragon, Gravel, she doesn’t seem to know how to act like a dragon, and her mannerisms can make her come across as alien or threatening. While well-meaning and hard working, she’s isolated and abrasive, and is quite unused to having friends, family, or anyone who cares. |
TUNNELER
Tunneler isn’t a pet or familiar, per se. Tunneler is a wild creature living in the cliffs of Irthskaar that Athena initially met while doing work around the canyon, lingering around a dig site and generally making a mess of things. She was originally tasked in driving him off but, for whatever reason, felt a strange camaraderie with him. Instead of slaughtering him, she opted to begin trying to tame him, and now visits him occasionally with food to keep him placated and far, far away from Irthskaar’s mining and excavation operations.
