EARLY LIFE
____Maeve's father passed away unexpectedly shortly before she was born, and the nosos virus had progressed too far for her mother to look after herself, let alone a hatchling who anyone could see at a glance had inhereted her mother's illness. Seuss took an interest in their situation and offered to take her in; Ahnmik and Anhamirak had been friends and fellow mages, he was frustrated that he hadn't been able to do anything for Ahnmik and wished to continue studying the virus. ____Maeve turned out to be a difficult child, and she didn't seem to like his mammertee dolls much. Poppy and Ruby had been happy to play with them as infants but Maeve always turned her nose up or tossed them away. One day when Seuss was with Calla and the girls in the market Maeve got away from them in the crowd, and after a moment of frantic searching they heard laughter coming from a nearby tent. "Is this yours?" a deep voice asked, and Rhea slid out of the tent, Maeve cupped in her massive paw. The baby coatl was hugging a very distrungtled poodlemith familiar, giggling and petting its fuzzy neck ruff. Seuss apologized and with difficulty disentangled his daughter from the poor mith. On their way home he stopped at the tailor's and commissioned a pair of poodlemith dolls. When they arrived a few days later Maeve squeeled and wouldn't put them down, tottering around on her hind paws and making Seuss very nervous that the fragile coatl would hurt herself. Over the years Maeve accumulated more and more of the dolls, and they slowly formed piles around her room and on her bed. She was well past the age when one played with such things, but Seuss (and Argent when he came to visit) continued to bring them back for her as souvenirs. She probably had a pair from every tailor and dollmaker in Sornieth by now, but secretly it still made her happy whenever she got a new one, not that she'd ever tell them that. |
