Relic’s dream was darker than They’d expected. A clear, moonless sky stretched overhead, marred only by the pillar of smoke rising from a small, burning village. A nightmare, then. Good. That would make Their job that much easier. They unraveled a bit, tendrils spreading across the grassy fields and cobblestone paths of the dream, seeking Their quarry. Instead they found her. Immediately the Nathacar gathered itself, thoughts of the ridgeback all but forgotten. Their form curled up as tightly as it could, Their whispers softened to murmurs, but there was no point; she had already noticed Them. A great, glowing imperial robed in a cloak of amethyst alighted before Them in what had once been the village square. Stars twinkled all over her body, brightly burning but practically dim in comparison to her eyes. They shone from her face like angry suns, burning into Their twisting form. Panora, some of the voices whispered. The dreamwalker has come. “You have broken your word,” the imperial said. There was no shock or anger in her tone; she had been expecting this. “We have done no such thing,” one of Their voices hissed. Panora regarded Them coldly. “There’s no point in denying it,” she replied. “You said you would never again invade the dreams of the innocent, yet here you are. Our agreement is broken.” “But this dragon is not innocent,” a different voice snapped. It was an older one, a scholar perhaps, or a diplomat. “It came to this place to hunt us. We are simply defending ourselves.” The imperial’s expression didn’t change, but They could see her thinking. “I had heard Relic was hunting some sort of Horror,” she admitted. “I assumed he meant one of the other two, not you.” The Nathacar squirmed impatiently, and one of the lesser voices spoke out. “Well, you were wrong, he meant us. You can ask him yourself if you don’t believe us. Now get out of our way, witch, and stop wasting our time.” Panora glanced in the direction of the voice, and with a bright flash it was severed from existence. The rest of the Nathacar once again fell silent and still. “You will leave this place,” the imperial commanded. “Go back to your library and walk this plane no more." She hesitated for a brief moment, then continued. "I will let our agreement stand, but I will not allow you to kill one of mine, regardless of what they’ve done to you.” Many voices snarled or howled in anger, but there was nothing to be done. The Nathacar’s power was fragmented in this world; Panora could destroy Them entirely if she wished to. “Very well,” the scholarly voice said, rising above the caterwaul. “We will leave. But know that this will not be forgotten.” “No,” Panora replied, eyes boring into Their form. “I expect it won’t.” |
