You keep a steady, battle-hardened glare as you trudge through the crowd. Dragons rush to get out of your way; you try to make yourself believe that it's out of respect, rather than fear. ... It doesn't work. As you arrive at the bunker, a dreadful silence falls over the already somber dragons. They know very well why you're here, and keep their gazes steadily at their feet. Roughly snatching a young drake by the collar before they can even cry out, you drag them with you as you begin to trudge towards the training grounds. Hundreds of fearful, glinting eyes follow your movement as you leave. ... You know the feeling very well. Even you were in their place, once, too. It sickens you to this day, that such a strong feeling of relief would come when someone else was dragged away, and all you could think was "At least it wasn't me." It was spoken of as such a lofty position, if you were chosen. You would be called one of the Exalted, and you would have the chance to completely devote yourself to your Element, to your deity. You would be there, to protect and serve right by their side, for the rest of eternity. Everyone knew that description left out quite a few important details. To serve one's deity, one would be sent to fight in the endless, bloody battle for elemental dominance. When injured, one was simply patched back up with spare parts and sent out again to fight. An immortal soldier, never to be allowed to rest. As you show the drake to their new room, where they will reside while training, you keep your gaze steady and hard, never looking into their eyes. Your face never falters, no matter how sick you feel inside. As much as you hate to do it, this is your duty for your Element, and you will not let your loyalty waver. |
