- Ae-Ri's father was a great warrior who lost his life to a cruel warlord. As recompense for his father's dishonor, A-Yeon was taken as payment.
- He was raised to be the warlord's courtesan, as a slight against his father, but he did his best to fulfill the role. The other courtesans raised him to be perfect, just what the warlord would want. He was to belong to him, body, mind, and soul.
- Though he knew his father had been dishonored and he himself a captive, Ae-Ri rationalized it for years. He was presented to the warlord on the day he reached maturity, and the man was most pleased with him.
- That night, he took him to his chambers. Just as Ae-Ri had expected. The next day he rested at his side. Just as he had expected.
- Then, the warlord offered him as payment to another warlord he was meeting with.
- And just like that, the gilded cage around his rotten heart fell away. All the hatred he had contained, all the pain he had swallowed, for years now, came bubbling out of him.
- His father's blade hung on the wall. By the end of the night, it was stained with blood.
- Love? Don't be ridiculous. All people want is a lovely face.
