Ekaitz waited for death. He knew it would come and he hoped it would greet him sooner rather than later. The band of Serthis he'd failed to outrun showed him no mercy and their high pitched voices were drowned out only by his screams. Their toxins were coursing through his blood now and Serthis' victory chants were beginning to fade. His head burned with fever but his legs tingled with cold. He couldn't feel them anymore and wasn't sure anything could reach them now.

"It won't be long now, death dealer," a raspy voice said. It took a moment to realize the Serthis member was speaking his tongue. Like a fool, he felt a spark of hope. With great effort, Ekaitz turned to face his tormentor and white hot pain streaked through him. He moaned but managed to meet the eyes of the Serthis member who had spoken.

He was darker than any Serthis member Ekaitz had ever seen. Jet black hair cascaded down his back, his eyes so dark he could hardly see the pupils. He wore blood red armor and Ekaitz didn't have to use his gift to know it was the stained with the blood of dragonkind. A smile twisted the Serthis's features, his mouth hung slightly open and his sharp fangs dripping a potent poison. His teeth, black as pitch, had been stained by the creature's own toxins. Ekaitz's lungs caught and he struggled to breathe as he watched the obsidian scaled Serthis sidled up to him. Ekaitz was larger by far but he'd never felt so defenseless.

He knew the this particular species honored bravery and viewed fear with contempt but Ekaitz couldn't help the way he tensed as the Serthis member latched onto his head. He had to fight a shudder when the creature lightly caressed his stone; the source of his magic. Despite the gentle touches of this Serthis member, Ekaitz could feel its malice. He was no friend to dragons. Ekaitz's courage failed him as he trembled in earnest. He tried to speak but his words failed him and the Serthis member clasped his maw, his sharp nails digging painfully into his jaw. The smiled turned into a sneer and Ekaitz whimpered as the Serthis's grip became a vice. Ekaitz's whimper turned to screams when he felt something crack. The Serthis forced his head back and Ekaitz didn't have the strength to resist where the creature's hand was leading him.

A vial was produced and Ekaitz's legs flailed. His head exploded in pain as the Serthis member further crushed his jaw in an effort to keep him still but Ekaitz fought the hold, his whole body thrashing in terror. More Serthis joined their leader, pinning Ekaitz to the ashen floor. He tried to summon even an ounce of magic but the pain was too intense and his reserves were already spent. He collapsed.

"Please," he gasped, "No more venom."

The Serthis's eyes danced, gleeful at his victory. He presented the vial to Ekaitz as though to taunt him and Ekaitz found he couldn't tear his eyes from the pitch in the glass. It was darker than any poison he'd ever seen a Serthis produce. It belonged to his tormentor, of that he was sure.
Ekaitz could only watch as the Serthis member brought the vial level with his gaze. And then the vial was above his eyes and by the time he realized the Serthis's intent, it was too late. Black poison, as thick as the tar found in the ashfall waste, scalded his left eye.

A scream, unlike any he'd ever heard, ripped forth from his throat and Ekaitz roared with all the life he had left. Ekaitz dug inside himself, looking for the last vestiges of his magic and found only a spark. It was all he needed. Shadow magic began to purify his blood, chasing the poison from his veins, and the essence of The Tangled Wood began to fill him. Murderous rage coursed through him and his magic, usually used for healing, became lethal. He called the darkness forth and the fiery sky of the Molton Scar was bathed in murky darkness. Ekaitz could not see the band of warriors but he could sense them and he sent a barrage of shadow magic into the heart of their signature. High-pitched screams flooded the darkness and a grim satisfaction fell over Ekaitz. For the first time this cursed day, they were not his screams. The scent of iron wafted through the darkness and Ekaitz knew that his magic had aimed true. His gift had not failed him. When the air went silent, Ekaitz fell upon the scalding plates of the Molton Scar. The dragons in this area would not have appreciated this display of Shadow magic in their realm but Ekaitz was grateful for the warmth this region provided. His magic, truly exhausted and his strength at its end, Ekaitz fell. The darkness faded as his magic failed and the band of Serthis lay fallen as well. He wanted to laugh but found himself weeping.

He awoke to darkness. And Serthis. Ekaitz moaned, panic coursing through him, though he could not recall much of anything. He only knew that the Serthis's scent filled him with terror. He struggled to stand but found his legs would not hold him. He panted with the effort. A gentle hand settled him. He recognized the touch of a Serthis and shuddered. He tried to speak but vomited instead. Pain shot through his jaw, causing even more vomit to come up.

"Relax, Skydancer. I am not he. I am not Blackstone. And I will do you no harm."

Ekaitz's memories were coming back in rapid flashes. Attack. Serthis. Poison. Pain. Poison. Serthis. Pain. Poison.

He found it hard to believe the Serthis's words but he was too tired to fight and if he couldn't even stand, there'd be no running away. And even if he could run, there was no telling how many had survived the battle. And if they found him injured and still weak, they wouldn't hesitate to finish what they'd started.

Ekaitz was completely at the mercy of a Serthis member. Again. Reason gave way to panic and he tried to stand but his legs wobbled and once again, he fell. Tears of frustration and fear coursed down his cheeks. He sobbed out his panic. He barely felt the hand caress his head or the needle pressed against his neck.

"No," he cried. A sleep much like death took him.

Ekaitz was far more lucid the next time he woke. He lay still, listening for his captor. He heard nothing but he could sense him. His left eye had been bandaged so he could see nothing. He remembered the tar like poison and Ekaitz lifted his claw to his face. He should have been able to see light through the bandage at least. But he could see nothing. A hand stopped him.

“Am I blind?”

Ekaitz could feel the hesitation coming from the Serthis member and it perplexed him. The only emotions he’d ever felt from the species were mistrust, impulse, and a penchant for violence. It had never occurred to him that they could be multi- faceted creates, capable of feeling.

“Your left eye has been permanently damaged but only time will tell if you have lost total vision in your eye.”

“And my right eye?”

Again, hesitation hung in the air but even Ekaitz could not have missed the snort he heard.

“Perhaps you should try opening it?”

Slowly, Ekaitz opened his eye. The Ashfall Waste’s bright, fiery sky loomed overhead. He turned his head to find the Sethis member watching him with a wary eye. Like Blackstone, he was one of the larger of species. But where Blackstone bad been stained obsidian, this Serthis was deep red. Like most of his species, he kept his hair long and his bright red hair was tied behind his back with what Ekaitz assumed was ribbon. His powerful tail was marked by black and red stripes. His armor was the color of bone and Ekaitz paled at a sudden realization. It wasn’t the color of bone; it was bone. As Ekaitz studied him, The Serthis’s hand unknowingly traveled to the spear he carried. The Serthis didn’t trust Ekaitz anymore than Ekaitz trusted him. It was Ekaitz’s turn to snort.

“Lay down your weapon, Serthis,” he couldn’t help the way he spit out the last word. He too could wield venom. “I am in no condition to fight.”

A heavy silence settled between the two creatures.

“I am Bloodstone,” the Serthis said.
Ekaitz had to fight the urge to snort again.

“Bloodstone. Blackstone. You’re a real original species aren’t you?”

Bloodstone’s warm brown eyes steeled at the insult and his gaze bore into Ekaitz with a definite challenge. Ekaitz turned from the stare. It was a sharp reminder that he was not dealing with his own kind and vulnerable as he was, he didn’t want to test the patience of an inherently violent species obsessed with hierarchy.

“We are a simple species. And we have strong names.”

There was nothing simple about what he had experienced at the hands of this creature’s kind but Ekaitz wasn’t about to tell him that. But they were strong; Bloodstone was not wrong about that.

“So, his name was Blackstone? The one who attacked me?”

A curt nod gave him all the answer he needed.

“Blackstone hates all of dragonkind. He will take down any dragon if given the chance. And your breed are not graced with size or strength.”

Ekaitz tried not to take offense but he bristled at the insinuations that he was both small and weak. At his tallest, he was still taller than even the largest of Serthis. And hadn’t his magic fended off his would be killers? He didn't think it wise to say so, however. Instead, he ignored Bloodstone’s misconceptions.

“And you, Bloodstone?”

Another tense pause made Ekaitz nearly forget how to breathe.

“I am not fond of your kind. But I hate Blackstone more than I despise you.”

Bloodstone fixed Ekaitz with a hard stare.

“We are not a sentimental species but even we have our loyalties. There are things that even we would not do to our own. Blackstone is blinded by his hatred and he and his band have betrayed his own more times than I care to recall. He is no friend of mine.”

“If you are not sentimental and not fond of my kind, why did you save me?” It was a question he’d been meaning to ask for a while.

“I did not save you. You did that on your own. I merely tended to your wounds.”

For the first time, Bloodstone seemed uncomfortable with the conversation.
“Any dragon would have though I was beyond saving and most would have left me for dead. Why didn’t you?”

Bloodstone refused to meet Ekaitz’s gaze and picking up his spear, he began to sharpen the blades. After a long moment, he picked up his head.

“I have met many dragons in battle but I have never seen a dragon do what you did. I am a Serthis member bound to follow the strongest of my kind. You are not Serthis but you are strong. I will follow you.”

If his jaw weren’t broken, it would have been on the floor. There was no way he was going to travel with a deranged Serthis member. Bloodstone went back to sharpening his spear. When he was well healed, Ekaitz would set the record straight.
