Biography
Acetaminophen has come under scrutiny for claims that taking too much can cause liver damage. Acetaminophen is found in more than just Tylenol though. It is an ingredient in Excedrin, cold medications, and many prescription medications including *********. Although there are safety concerns with acetaminophen (and almost any other drug), it has many benefits. To prevent liver damage, never take more Tylenol or other acetaminophen drug than is recommended.
Acetaminophen poisoning is an overdose of the over-the-counter pain medicine acetaminophen, also known as Tylenol. Acetaminophen poisoning may occur as a result of an accidental or intentional overdose. This condition is potentially deadly and requires emergency medical attention. If given quickly enough, an antidote to acetaminophen can help neutralize the poison.
The outcome of acetaminophen poisoning depends on how much has been ingested, how quickly medical care is given, and the person's general health. When acetaminophen overdose is treated quickly, the death rate is less than 2%. Most people recover if treated quickly enough.
If only a small excess amount of acetaminophen has been taken, doctors may simply monitor your condition. For potentially dangerous amounts, an antidote for the drug, called Nacetylcysteine, is given by mouth. Doctors may also administer activated charcoal, which prevents the drug from being absorbed.
