I. “But I don’t want to go,” she whispered. Her small voice was hoarse: she’d been choking on tears for hours. Her father looked down with a grimace. She couldn’t read anything different about him except in his eyes. In the low, guttering light of the lanterns, they were liquid with pain.
The hut was small, crammed with dusty treasure and relics of past exploits. But at that moment, none of it meant anything.
At last he said, “But you have to go.” The words were thin and pale as ghosts.Sensing a breakthrough, she shook her head and fell on her stomach. The tears carved salty furrows into her cheeks. “No.”
After a long silence, he picked her up and embraced her. “Come with me.” The air outside was chill with the expectation of dawn. On the fringe of the village, a long line of horses laden with cargo panted and snuffled, their breath wreathing their fur with white fog.
As dawn peeped through the clouds and stained the scene pink-red, her father hoisted her into a cart. He gave her one final kiss on the forehead and whispered, “Stay safe.”
Then he whirled his cloak over his shoulder and stalked away, vanishing into the gloom.

II.The caravan bumped gamely over stony roads and left her with mysterious bruises. She knew that staying safe meant staying hidden. But one crisp morning, when the line came to a stop, she could hide no longer. The flavorful scent of meat and potatoes wafted into her nostrils. Her stomach one continuous cramp, she crawled out from beneath the heavy coats and came face-to-face with two laughing Nocturnes.
“Oi! What’s that?” One pointed and dropped a potato. It was gone in a flash down her throat. “Strangest bug I ever saw,” quipped the other. He snapped his talons before her face, like she was some exotic stray cat. “Come here, wee one. We don’t bite, and you’re not the first straggler we’ve had come along.”
“But she is the prettiest.” The other leaned toward her, eyes shining. “Would you look at that…” Her face flushed. She shyly pulled herself up and sat beside them, then gnawed at their leftovers. The realization that her father was gone struck her. All at once, she was homesick.
To distract herself, she asked, “Where are we going?” “Nowheres in particular, love.” The first nodded. “We’re all a part of Lady Amelia’s Traveling Shoppe, or whatever she’s calling it this week. Can you believe this stuff all belongs to one woman?”
Ysaly blinked and looked behind them. The wagons stretched on forever. “No. That’s—“ “I hope the next word from your mouth is going to be something flattering, for my own sake.” As if from nowhere, the Lady herself stood before them.
Ysaly blinked. Being raised by her father in a lonesome outpost of a hut, she’d never before seen such finery. She admired the red feather in the lady’s cap especially.
One of the Nocturnes elbowed her. “Bow, girl.” Ysaly leapt up and bowed so low her nose scraped the dirt. She sneezed and fell backward, then lay there, dizzy from hunger.
Amelia peered over her. Just as she couldn’t read her father, Ysaly had a difficult time deciphering her look—something between exasperation and laughter.
“Just as well,” Amelia said. “You’re coming with me.”.
