History
~~~~~
It wasn’t that she never wanted to believe in happy endings. It was just that, for a long time, she couldn’t.
She was born to parents who were much like her, much like the Lostlings, but with a tragically different story. Her mother feared leaving the cave; her father would be hyperactive and grandiose one week, depressed the next. They wanted more for her, despairing that she was a nervous child and praying she wouldn’t end up like them.
After she lost her father to causes unknown, but known in her heart, Breccia became like her mother. She would use her markings to blend in to the walls of caves, so that no one would find her and make her leave. She would spend a lot of the time in her birth clan’s hoard-room, keeping stock in her mind of all the items that came and went. The math soothed her, and she also liked imagining that each item had a history behind it. Breccia clung to safety.
But after her mother slipped away from an illness that should have been mild, Breccia felt an intense, unexplainable tug to journey in a direction she had never been. She ignored it for cycles, but it kept getting worse until a psychic pain was rushing her daily, begging her to go.
So she left, unwillingly inviting many moons of fear that were making her stronger, but sure didn’t feel like it. Travelling across the Shifting Expanse and Ashfall Wastes, too far gone (in more than one way) to turn back, Breccia would clench her teeth through the fear for a day and shiver and cry in a cave for two or three. What kept her going was her lack of choice, her pull towards the Windswept Plateau that would not abate.
Eventually, the fear itself started to abate, until she was no longer in agony and could travel a bit each day. It was in this purgatory that she finally reached the lair of the Lostlings. She fell to them, to her new home, utterly worn out, and slept most of the time for a moon. But as she caught glimpses of the Lostlings, their kindness and belief in her, their strength, she knew she didn’t want to go back to her old self. Her mother’s daughter. After that moon, she crept out of the cave more and more each day until she could be fine outside for a few hours at a time.
Breccia is now doing better than ever, though she’s still reserved, worrying that she will lose anyone she gets too close to. She knows that’s no way to live and is slowly working on it, shyly making friends. Knowing her limitations, she still spends time in the caves as a terrific and dedicated hoard organizer, but when she can she goes out with Leaf to explore and gather flora.
She thinks of her parents every day, but more and more she thinks of their strengths, some of which they passed on to her. Like her mother, Breccia is an expert on caves; like her father, she’s passionate about mathematics and relics. She strives towards the loyalty and patience they taught her. Breccia thinks that if they’d seen this clan, known its dragons, accepted its dragons, they might have had a happy ending after all. It’s painful to consider.
But she knows, now, she can’t give in to the pain. She has her parents to make proud.
