Biography

Haikei
he + him + his

Before the Troupe

His mother had had a beautiful voice, the kind that traveled across valleys and echoed over the open sea. When she spoke the world seemed to still long enough to listen, for she spoke quietly and always with gentility. And when she sang her voice carried no matter how soft her tone, winding through the trees and fluttering on the wind. There had been flowers in her hair and silk around her shoulders, and her hands had always been warm.

Haikei could always recall the sea, for it was the lullaby of his childhood. It sang a melody with his mother every night as he drifted off, and woke him with a tune each morning. They had lived on the shore, just the two of them, and in its simplicity there was blissful happiness.

Mother taught him to sing, always reminding him the importance of his voice. Even a child's voice held power, she would tell him, her hands always busy at work weaving and sewing, mending. He followed the notes and practiced his scales, weaving magic into his melodies just like she taught him. It delighted him how his mother could sing, he prayed to one day have a voice as beautiful as she.

Then there came men, and they called her a siren. Haikei didn't know what they meant, and mother always told him to go inside when the men passed by, muttering behind their hands. It never stopped her singing, she would sit by the shore and weave their fishing baskets and sing to him whenever he asked.

Haikei wishes he'd never asked, even if he knows that would never have stopped his mother singing.

One day he woke and his mother was not there. He called for her, the magic flickering in his voice, and she did not come. He screamed for her and she did not answer. He dashed to the shore and there she was, their fishing baskets strewn about her in ruins, her silk dress soaked with blood. The sand was red and the ocean lapped at her body, begging her to rise again for one last duet.

The men had called her siren. They blamed her for their broken anchors, their beached ships, the ill weather and their bad luck fishing. She tempted them they said, away from their wives and out to sea, where there was only misery and the treachery of her voice once more. Siren they said, for they were afraid of what they didn't understand, for they had never seen her voice coax flowers to blossom and birds to sing.

They wanted a siren? He would give them a siren. The kind they told about in stories. The kind that lured sailors to their deaths on a whim. The kind that haunted dreams and nightmares and laughed as men too foolish to know better drowned around them.

Haikei sang his sadness into the sea, and the sea answered him like an old friend. Perhaps it remembered his mother, or maybe it simply understood melancholy better than anything else, its unreachable depths nothing but cold. He sang, his pain and his anguish beautiful on his tongue, and the winds carried his voice out over the sea. Where his mother was kind, he was alluring, where his mother was gentle, he was seductive, where she had been soft, he was only cold.

The voice of tragedy was more beautiful than any other, for a wolf howls for what it cannot reach and birds sing loudest when trapped within cages. Haikei's songs outdid his mother's before long, the magic in his throat carrying out over the ocean and into the ears of all who passed. They perished, again and again, as they listened to his song of emptiness.

Finally, when his mouth tasted only of salt water and his tears had long dried, when the sailors now rested eternally at the bottom of the endless ocean, he ceased his song and wept one last time. Without his anger and his sadness, he was unsure what to make of himself, and so set out to find a place that was not the shore that had taken his mother from him.

And as he went, he came by the Troupe...

Ability | Swan Song | An auditory ability wherein the possessor is capable of imbuing their voice with magic. This act does not appear to be conscious, and is instead something possessors must learn to control from a very young age. The name Swan Song comes predominantly from the possessors' ability to kill via their voice, most often through the medium of song. Volume often has very little to do with the effectiveness of the possessors' songs, and instead relies more heavily on the intent and emotion behind their singing. Lyrics and tune appear to have no effect on things, as single notes can have devastating effects. However this ability is not purely offensive, as the possessors are also capable of using their voices to heal both physical and mental wounds. It is something of a shame that this ability is named after its most lethal quality, as its benign properties are just as awe inspiring.

"He sang. He sang and he sang, into the wind and the waves as tears rolled down his cheeks, and when his voice died in his throat he pulled his voice from his very soul and sang once more."
