Ashalind
Cartographer
Lady of the Circle

"Let me not beg for the stilling of my pain but for the heart to conquer it."
-Rabindranath Tagore, Fruit-Gathering

"Unremembered, yesterday is extinct.
Without yesterday, today has no meaning.
Who are you, if forgotten?
Who are you, but the sum of your memories?"

Thus Ashalind writes in a rare reminiscing moment, distracted from her work by a sudden reminder of her past. She observes the careful, delicate script for a few more seconds before sighing and rolling up her various papers, returning them to organized piles of scroll cases. Then she stands up.

She crosses the main hall to leave the lair and soon reaches the nearby lake, filled with Day Lilies glowing in the afternoon sun. Ashalind circles a spot near the bank and finds a comfortable patch of grass to settle on. There, she takes a few deep breaths, focuses on feeling the sunshine's warmth, and takes her thoughts away from the murky depths of her memories to instead reflect on more recent happenings.

...

It hasn't been long since she joined the clan, but Ashalind had noticed from the first day how radically different it is from everything she had previously been a part of. The dragons here are open and friendly, and they try their best to be inclusive even though she doesn't quite fit in. It can't be helped; the others can take her quietness and reserve in stride, but they're not so used to dealing with the air about her that's so different from theirs. She has the bearing and speech patterns of a noble, but her other traits paradoxically indicate otherwise. Instead of acting superior, she's unfailingly mild-mannered and unassuming. It's not what one would expect from a specialist in the upper echelons of Light scholars.

What truly sets her apart, though, is something even more deeply ingrained. She looks at the dragons around her and sees an innocent happiness she has lost long ago, when that fateful journey to the Starwood Strand destroyed everything she held dear. She may be a part of this clan but she will remain an aloof acquaintance to its members, declining to talk about her past because it would make them feel unnecessary pain and pity even though they can't possibly understand what she went through, and also because what had hurt her most is terrible knowledge nobody should be burdened with. She's still young, and yet she feels so old.

All of this had gone through her mind the day she arrived. She would have left. However, a single dragon changed her mind.

They exchanged few words during their introductions, nothing more than polite greetings, but she had instantly found something familiar in Bitterblue's eyes. They were the world-weary eyes of someone who had seen too much darkness and lost too much, someone who had been torn apart by cruel circumstance and left broken and discarded in the dust, yet found the strength to piece themselves back together and continue living even though they could never be the same again. Ashalind saw herself in those eyes, along with a flash of reciprocated acknowledgement that invited her to stay. And she did.

Initially, not much happened. Ashalind soon found out that Bitterblue was even quieter than her; the young Guardian participated in some clan activities, but there were very few dragons she actually spoke to on a frequent basis. It took a few days for Ashalind to work out what emotional state Bitterblue was in. It was that stage of all-encompassing numbness, when one felt like they should be living and wanted to live, but had went through so much loss they couldn't find the energy to truly care about anything or recognize the meaning of their existence. Having just barely gotten out of that state, Ashalind understood it all too well.

It would be a long and difficult process, with both of them being slow to open up and not having all that much in common to talk about, but Ashalind began to draw Bitterblue out of her apathy. Between her mapping work and her trips, it became a sort of mission to get Bitterblue outdoors and encourage her to appreciate the little things again, subtly guiding her along the path Ashalind herself had found. To her gratification, she saw it begin to take effect; by now there was a sense of quiet companionship when the two of them were together. It was a beginning, and Ashalind would see it through.

...

Ashalind stretches in the grass, enjoying the glow of contentment that was beginning to form in her. Yes, this could work. She could live here. She may be different from the rest of the clan, but the atmosphere is more than friendly enough to make up for it, and both her work and Bitterblue are helping to ground her in the present. The Labyrinth has been a refreshing change, invigorating, brimming with life and promising new beginnings. Here, Ashalind can shake off the oppressiveness of her previous clan and start over, finding new friends and things to care for.

(Not that you can choose to return. There's no one left. No one.

Who are you? Who are you but the sum of your memories?

But maybe that doesn't matter. Maybe forgetting does not only stand for loss. It can mean recreation, too.)
