Athame is sharp and outspoken, and as some of his opinions are not very popular, the higher-ups in the clan were pleased to have him become a messenger - and very pleased to keep him flying about on his own most of the time. Athame does not concern himself with coddling others, and is honest beyond a fault. However, his few friends have learned to put up with his uncomfortably honest comments and cherish his clever advice, and his keen observation is often helpful to the clan as a whole. He regularly stops on his journeys to speak with the hermits of Clan Augur who live in out of the way caves. Curious, observant, blunt, and prideful.

Born of an Augur dam and a Varr sire during a time when such a mating was at best seen as controversial (at worst, treasonous), Athame was an outsider from the start. While his dam was generally accepted (along with her clutch of one) in the clan, his sire - Dagger, a notable warrior and unusually fast flier for a Wildclaw - was ostracized by his Varrish clanmates to the point that he decided to leave the underworld altogether. He continued to meet with his beloved in secret on the Borderlands but Athame was present at relatively few of these clandestine rendezvous. Therefore, he was raised among the Augur, always seen as a second-class dragon despite his keen mind and physical skills, always viewed with a touch of suspicion.

Until the First War for the Deepheart.

Varr and Augur had shared the underworld only grudgingly, trading with and raiding each other in turn. Around Athame's 300th year the common tunnel skirmishes exploded into all-out war. With his mixed heritage supporting either side felt like betraying part of himself, yet he did his duty to the clan that raised him, joining the Augur Aerial Army.

Athame knew that being half-Varr was a black mark against him; he would never attain great rank no matter how capable. While he toiled among the airborne infantry he watched dragons of lesser ability promoted. This would not have bothered the stoic young dragon, except that he had reached that age when mating begins to appeal. And the potential mate that appealed most was very highly ranked indeed.
