Biography
Salem |
• °"Stars, hide your fires | Let not light see my black and deep desires"
Macbeth, William Shakespeare ° • |
The light never touched Salem when she was born. She would hold out her claw and watch it burn against the tendrils of smoke that wrapped around her. She flew to the highest mountains and bathed in the sunlight scattered across the sky but only the darkness would dance with her and caress her, choking her to sleep. "Why don't you ever do magic?" An excited little spiral asked one day, bouncing around her. "All the other skydancers can, I bet yours is the prettiest!" The tendrils were there, aching to be called upon. Salem just shook her head and crawled closer to the darkness. The whispers grew from there - the rumours and guesses traveled around the clan. "You know, I bet she doesn't even have magic. She's from a long line of spirals you know." "Is that how it works?" "Who knows, it would explain her weirdness." Weirdness, peculiarity, abnormality; these words echoed through the clan in hushed tones, most of the time in her presence. She doesn't remember when the comments stopped, or when her clan mates stopped visiting her. Her memory is flooded with the countless hours spent awake keeping the darkness at bay. The darkness tingled when she cried. Salem be nimble Salem be quick Salem run fast from the fire's lick She remembers the screaming, the glow as the smoke choked out her helpless clan. She watched the clan drown in the flames from her mountain far away. She couldn't explain how she had known, but she knew why she had kept it to herself. "All right." She glanced away from the carnage and at the calling of the hills. The darkness smirked as it pushed her towards the edge. "I'll listen." ~ |
In a different time, at a different place, who knows how many years had come and gone because to her time is standing still. Travel, sleep, and repeat. She never found another home since she lost hers, but she prefers her vagabond lifestyle. At least there is no one she will hurt.
Today she finds herself around the Reedcleft Ascent in the Windswept Plateau, she doesn't know what it is about the wind territory that calls to her. If anything she finds the excitable spirals scurrying around very repelling, but maybe because it is a flight of travellers as well. A home for the homeless. She knows someone is there before they even have a chance to reveal themselves, the darkness runs through her veins guiding her wandering eyes to the right, resting on a rustling brush. The brush makes a sharp movement and the darkness leaves her fingers and the brush doesn't exist anymore. Her whole buddy tenses, unwilling to meet the dragon behind it and she sprints away from the scene. The darkness surrounded her, whispering for her about the danger and to fight, but she buried the thoughts and focused on one step after another. Until she wasn't running anymore, the sky filled her vision and pain erupted from her back, she felt the darkness wrap around her heart bleeding it to fuel her rage. She let out a few shaky breaths while her claws turned into fists and a dragon entered her sight. |
"Are you okay?" The dragon asks. Salem is confused for a moment, unsure why they aren't fighting right now. The dragon gives her a soft smile and a green smoke surrounds her, she panics for a moment but she feels the pain dissipate from her, a healing spell. She scrambles to her feet and prepares to bolt again but the dragon speaks again.
"Pardon me but, where is your clan?" The dragon looks at her with a sense of curiosity. "No-nowhere, I'm foraging by myself." The dragon gives her a slow nod. "And does your clan know then, how close to the Shade you are?" There is a pause before it boils inside of her, the darkness shatters her scales, pouring out of her now and she is unable to control it. She only lets out a small cry. However when the shadows leave the dragon remains standing there, "Impressive." She remarks. "How-get-get away from me." She warns, if rather pathetically. The dragon just begins to circle around her. |
"You have a gift, you do even if you don't know it yet." The dragon pauses turning her bright smile to her. "And I want to help you, you need it." She begins to back away from her.
"No you don't, you don't know what you are getting yourself into. Just leave me alone." The dragon shook her head.
"You can't control it, you know I'm right." Salem was dumbstruck through this whole conversation, why would someone ever want to help her.
"I'm cursed."
"If you believe you are that's all you'll ever be. You have more magic in your scales then I do in my whole body." She puts a claw to her heart to exaggerate her point.
"Why then, why do you want to help me?" This is bad, signals are flying through her head and this conversation should not even be happening.
"I see a troubled dragon and I need to help them, it's what I do."
