Dancer's Bell
High Priestess
Cheerful Chime

The tinkling of bells could be heard around the chapel. It wasn't the loud, raucous clanging of the Great Bell in the bell tower, though. No, this chiming came from the inner sanctuary of the church.

Moondust decided to follow the sound deeper into the chapel, against his better instincts. He moved through two huge doors, and the dull black stone of the hallways behind him paled in comparison to the room now situated before him.

Great opulent designs on the ornate walls descried the legends passed down in this chapel, and many of them were gruesome. Far down at the end of the walkway, a dais sat with a single figure resting before the altar.

He stopped in his tracks and watched for a second, scarcely daring to draw a breath. But she didn't seem to notice him or care about his presence, so he continued his archaeologist's perusal of the mosaic decorating the walls.

Images of grand dragons in white tunics were the most prevalent designs. Creepily enough, they all had glowing red eyes. Yet, there, at the wall's end, close to the mysterious she-dragon, was a picture of a different kind.

The dragons depicted in it looked familiar. One, the main piece of the scene, was a tall Skydancer, with crystal-white scales and magnificent wings.

It took Moondust a second to realize the Skydancer was himself. In the image, beside him stood another of the white-robed dragons, a female with muted colors and those same red eyes. A lovely Pearlcatcher.

From the clouds, beams of gold light burst forth onto the pair, and indistinct figures of dragons swam in the shadows cast by the pair's wings.

"It's us," said the dragon far in front of him, her lilting voice soft and delicate as the bells that had earlier lured Moondust here.

"What?" Moondust shifted to face her, slightly disgruntled from his discovery.

Her head was bowed over the gleaming pearl she held tenderly in her talons. Bells were arrayed around her, connected to her tunic by streams of satiny white ribbon. Pearly rings pierced the edges of her shimmery wings. She raised her head and turned around to look at him.

She was even more breathtaking than in the mural on the wall, despite her strange, hypnotic red eyes.

"The mosaic. It shows us. You and me. You were destined to come here. I've been waiting for you, ever since I became High Priestess," she said in that chiming voice, the one that made Moondust feel dizzy on his feet.

"I don't understand," he said stupidly.

The priestess laughed, but Moondust didn't feel like she was mocking his ignorance. "You're to take me back with you to your clan. That is where I can be most useful as the High Priestess."

Moondust narrowed his eyes. "But what about the chapel here?"

"This decrepit old place has sentimentality because I was raised here, but that is as far as my love for it goes," she said simply. "I am the only one left."

Moondust shook his wings, using the time to think. He thought he'd come up with a good way to refuse her when she said suddenly, "You doubt my knowledge. I understand. But if you leave, I will follow you regardless. You can hardly ignore the mural of us together."

Moondust shook his head. "I don't exactly hold a position of power in my clan. I can't just bring you in unannounced. You have to talk to--"

"To Ribbon and Moonbreaker, yes. I know. They'll let me in, I've foreseen it. I'm not worried." She fixed Moondust in an unwavering gaze, her red eyes burning through to his soul. "You can't leave me now, you know."

In that look she'd given him, Moondust realized she was right. There was no way he was letting this beautiful priestess get away. She would be quite an asset to his clan, and she truly believed that the image on the wall spoke the future.

"Fine," he allowed, relinquishing all his pent up misgivings. "I'm Moondust. Hello. Nice to meet you."

The Pearlcatcher laughed again. "I'm Lysia, Last High Priestess of the Amaranth Court," she said and glanced down at the pearl she clutched to her chest. The furtive movement made her look almost... shy.

"What does it mean?" Moondust inquired, looking back at the mural.

"It means," Lysia paused. "It means that we will be great. That's what it means."

But it felt to Moondust like she was keeping something from him.
