Marquise (Also known as Marq)
Geneticist
An expert in or student of heredity and the variation of inherited characteristics. A biologist who studies genetics, the science of genes, heredity, and variation of organisms. Marquise practices genetic engineering. He receives funding so long as he is able to create things that benefit the clan, such as genetically modifying crops to be bigger and tastier. "In 20 billion years, the universe will have torn itself apart and all distances will have become infinite, but I just want to know if you wanna get coffee tomorrow maybe." An intelligent geneticist, Marquise enjoys tinkering with the genetic buildup of living organisms, usually dragons. Some could say that those the innocent dragons he experiments on are more "dragon" than he. He hides his experiments though, creating GMO plants/crops and such as a feint for the clan and to receive funding for his work. Other - Character Traits: Astute, Rash, Intelligent, Curious, Destructive, Abrasive - Sin vs. Virtue: Wrath/Diligence - Marquise cannot feel love for another dragon. - Marquise is part Imperial and Nocturne. He shares all genes with his father and shimmer and circuit genes with his mother. - Likes: Brewery, Science, Flying, Sleeping, Mythology, Flowers, Reading - Dislikes: Bones, Failure - Secret(s): His extremely unethical experiments - His harlequin stagwing is named Mixi. He seems to enjoy his master's company, but will stay away from his lab. - Marquise performs experiments on the fodder of two of his clan's blackmarket merchants, Deja and Darya, as a form of blackmail. Such practices would be enough to have them exiled from the clan if they were found out. - He also experiments on prisoners. Ryker, the warden, allows this. - Marquise had an apprentice, Behira. She found out about his experiments and was horrified. She quit, fearfu of what could happent oherl, but told Marquise that she was quitting because she wanted to pursue a role in another type of science. Marquise was suspicious because Behira had expressed extreme interest in genetics and heredity, so her departure was sudden and odd to him. However, he does not know that she knows about his experiments. Still, he keeps an eye on her. - One of Marquise's biggest fantasizes was having a living weapon to would bend to his every will. So his own adopted son became a test subject of his. He'd fashion ***** that would enhance his every ability, which they did. However, they also caused him to develop some problems regarding his brain. Marquise wanted a weapon, not a son. - He has made genetically engineered food. Some of these include those that can make you stronger against diseases, food free from allergens, and food with enhanced vitamins. - His tentacle mane and tail were side effects of an experiment in which he attempted to give himself the ability to breathe underwater. All of these tentacles are rather long and can stretch to great lengths. Instead of being able to breathe underwater, he gained a useful tool and weapon. Origin Story Marquise was born into an interesting clan. The dragons of his clan were as decent as Scarred Wasteland residents could be. His father was a Nocturne, but he fell in love with an Imperial living just outside the clan's borders. She promptly joined the clan's ranks. They would have a nest of one. Later, Marquise would hatch under his parent's care. He lived a relatively normal childhood, as normal as it could be for a hatchling living close to the Wrymwound. He was an incredibly intelligent and gifted hatchling and often dreamed about being some sort of researcher or scientist when he grew up. However, when Marquise was a young adult, a new dragon took charge. He was nothing short of a dictator, so his word became law. One of his many decrees demanded that all Imperials be banished because the threat they posed when they died. Marquise began to panic. He didn't want to leave the place where he had grown up and made friends. He begged his new leader, who offered him a deal. If he could kill his own Imperial mother, he would be allowed to stay. Delirious and without any other options, he obeyed. After this Marquise was feared in the clan for his actions, but his loyalty earned him his place as the leader's right hand man. Soon after this, his father would take his own life. He had been suffering from soul-rending guilt and heartbreak, believing he raised a monster. This caused Marquise to further spiral down into a psychopathic and ruthless state. Marquise continued to prove his loyalty to the leader and was even provided treasure to pursue a career in science until the clan leader was overthrown. He had lived fabulously with riches and fine, sanguine jewelry, but that was over. Given the fact he had been so close to the leader, he was swiftly banished. Marquise took only his research and his familiar and left to waste away in the Scarred Wasteland. About a week into his banishment, Marquise was close to meeting his end but was found by a Lavaburst scouting party. These dragons, Naathim, Celestine and Starglider, nursed him to health and decided to bring him back to their clan. He lived there for a short while as a refugee, but was later allowed to join. However, he had lied to the Court to get in. Here, he currently pursues experiments and studies in genetics. There's something, off, with Marquise. Maybe it's his experiments, maybe it's the way he moves. Or maybe, it the seemed lack of empathy and the way he looks at other dragons; as if they were nothing more than puppets. Marquise himself is confused by this, especially his inability to feel for others. He's always been like this, he was born like it; but none of his parents are this way. He can't understand it, how can this be? He's researching on genetics, not psychology.
How will your dear genetics explain this, little Marquise? Experiments He hides these experiments away from his clan for obvious reasons. Multiple-Winged Dragons (MW Dragons 01) - Only Spirals have multiple wings, and they seem to fly extremely fast, though erratically. If Marquise could double the number of wings a dragon has, it could double their speeds. Sunspot Clouddancers are fast fliers, Banded Owlcats can fly silently, and Brown Riverflights can use their wings to propel through water quickly. Beforehand, Marquise had briefly studied birds and their types of wings so he could get a feel for what kind of wings he had wanted his experiment to have. He had wanted long and narrow wings, as they were good for soaring (flying w/o flapping the wings). Test Subject: Zyere, Ice Wildclaw Female DNA used: Sunspot Clouddancer, Banded Owlcat, Brown Riverflight Experiment Performance: Combination of subject's DNA with separate animal DNA Effect: Bird-like talons grow instead of claws, Beak grows on subject instead of a snout, Eyes double, tail shrinks to an otter tail covered in fur Status: FAILURE Bioluminescence (Yellow Fluorescence Protein Dragons/YFP Dragons 01) - It seems though bioluminescence in dragons is rare and few in between, a few exceptions including Luciferins and dragons with certain genes. However, what if dragons didn't need to be a special subspecies or carry a certain gene? Bioluminescence can prove itself important, especially for those living in dark places. Test Subject: Marina, Water Pearlcatcher Female DNA used: Citrine Jewels Experiment Performance: Eggs are injected with Citrine Jewel proteins for yellow fluorescence. Effect: Hatch of three - E2#1 - (Light Wildclaw Male, Phthalo Cherub, Turquoise Peregrine, Sky Spines) Subject expresses the protein and is healthy. The subject will only glow in the dark. Light appears in horns and in Cherub gene. The subject will be kept with Darya and studied. E2#2 - (Light Wildclaw Male, Phthalo Cherub, Turquoise Peregrine, Sky Spines) Subject expresses the gene, but will only glow in the dark, similar to the first. Light appears in horns and in Cherub gene. The subject will be kept with Darya and studied. E2#3 - (Light Wildclaw Female, Phthalo Cherub, Turquoise Peregrine, Cornflower Spines) Subject is wild type. She does not express the gene. With no purpose, she will be disposed of. Effect on Subject: Subject is sick, likely from the fungus. She has repeatedly vomited up the fungus. She can easily be nursed to health. Conclusion: 2/3 chance of transgenic hatchlings expressing the yellow fluorescent protein. Status: SUCCESS Gembond Cure ( Test Subject: Rhoviel, Shadow Imperial Female DNA used: None, a protein found in onyx cobra venom Experiment Performance: Subject would be injected with the protein. Gembond would be genetically modified for biomedical purposes and to test a form of gene therapy as a cure for unwanted gembond. Effect: Subject's gembond worsens, spreading to more places around her body. Her diet changes to that of a carnivore. Status: FAILURE Gift of Water-Breathing ( Test Subject: Himself DNA used: Protein found in multiple aquatic species, mostly Jeweled Octoflyer Experiment Performance: Subject would be injected with the protein. The goal was to gain gills in addition to lungs in the subject, but this failed. Effect: Mane transformed into tentacles, tail transformed into tentacle Status: FAILURE - Cheeji (Children) - Ichigo, Unnamed (Grandchildren) - Unnamed, Unnamed (Great Grandchildren) |
