Dvorak
The Scholar

A striped purple figure slinks through the woods. In the cool shade, it brings to mind a field of Spring Beauty flowers, with soft shimmering stripes of lavender and white. The dragon pauses occasionally, peering closely at the small and delicate wildflowers that can be seen sprouting in thin bunches from the forest floor, and marks down which species he sees and where they're located. He's cataloging them and charting their growth! The mountains are a wonderfully diverse and wild place - there are species of flora and fauna here which are found nowhere else. It would be remiss not to record them for posterity...

On the days when he's not shadowing one of his family members to learn more about what they do for a living, Dvorak often hikes the ridgelines and mountains studying the landscape and recording his observations. He could be an excellent botanist if he wanted, but of course he's not content to limit himself to one field of study. Moreso than any other member of his family, he loves to learn. He's so unashamedly eager about it, and so sincere in his interests in others that none of the other dragons can resist helping him out, either. He's gregarious and kindhearted, even if he's slightly single-minded in his pursuit of knowledge, and his friendly presence is a welcome addition to the Ferndale Colony.

A SCHOLAR AND STUDENT

Dvorak firmly believes that there's nothing healthier than a sharp mind, and his is like a steel trap. He tries to make a goal of learning one new thing a day, especially if it's surprising or unexpected. All knowledge is welcome, regardless of the source - in that regard, he's perhaps the most open-minded and accepting of all the Ferndale dragons, just like his adopted mother and charge, Kyra. As a result, he often hangs out around the other dragons simply watching them work, wanting to learn more about what they do for a living. Even dragons like Rhynne or Beverly who normally prefer to not be disturbed while they work enjoy Dvorak's company, as he is so eager to learn that they can't help but want to teach him the intricacies of gardening or pottery-making.

Each evening after dinner, Dvorak retires to his cozy room in the back of the house behind the attic staircase. The space beneath the stairs has been converted to shelving, and each day he lies down upon a soft cushion to painstakingly record the details of his day in his journal. So far he's got almost a half-dozen volumes filled with his careful writing and pictures! Ever since he was a wee hatchling, he's been an eager reader, and it was no surprise that his charge turned out to be Kyra, a dragoness who loved books herself. She was all too happy to encourage him, and his library is well on its way to matching the splendor of her own. Although she loves all of her family, Kyra can't help but be most proud of Dvorak, for he takes after her most of all.

Each market day, he accompanies the rest of his family to town in search of new books, eagerly devouring tales of far-off lands and dragons and reminiscing about the time he spent wandering the lands in search of his charge. Wonderful memories, of course, but in the end, his home is with the Ferndale clan.
