The Moon is lonely. A long time ago, she used to have a lover. His name was Kuekuatsu and they lived together in the spirit world. They wandered across the star fields together every night, drawing courage and comfort from one another. They were happy together and everything was perfect. But, there was another who loved the Moon – an evil trickster. He was jealous of Kuekuatsu and wanted the beautiful Moon for himself. He wanted her beauty and the power she held over the night. He believed that if she became his lover, all her power would be his for the taking. He plotted for eons until the perfect plan came to him. Trickster approached Kuekuatsu one day, telling him that Moon had asked for some flowers. He suggested that Kuekuatsu look for them on the Earth. From the skies, Trickster helped Kuekuatsu look for flowers, but none were good enough. Eventually, they stopped over a field of wild flowers. Here, the wild roses in full bloom caught Kuekuatsu's eye. "These will be the perfect flowers for my Moon," Kuekuatsu said. Trickster encouraged Kuekuatsu to retrieve the flowers. And Kuekuatsu did. In his haste, he pricked himself on the thorns, but knew the pain would be worth it for Moon's smile. He picked the wild roses and waited in the field until night, hoping to surprise his lover. Meanwhile, the Trickster watched and waited… When evening came, the Moon came running across the sky, looking for Kuekuatsu. She was worried and just as she was about to give up, she found her lover in the field of wild flowers. The very sight of him made her glow so bright and she reached out for him. Kuekuatsu went leap into the sky and meet her, but he couldn't. He had forgotten that once you left the spirit world, you could never return. The Moon had forgotten too. She stayed with him as long as she could, providing him light within the darkness. But eventually, she had to leave, for morning was not her domain. The next night, Trickster came to comfort her, but failed for the Moon was as wise as she was beautiful. She knew then that he was responsible for their pain. She took up her bow and arrows, and drove him from her domain. He fled into the darkness. She remembered her lover then, in the field of flowers. She traveled back and sure enough, he was still there. He howled her name in anguish and she whispered his. Kuekuatsu hadn't lost his powers, but had lost his love. He wandered the Earth in misery, returning to the field each night and the Moon rose to give him solace. Their tears created a lake by the field over time and soon, Kuekuatsu morphed into a wolf, as it was easier to survive that way. To this day, each night he and his descendants look up to the sky and see the Moon. They howl her name. He can never be with her again. And that is why the moon is lonely. |
