Fear of Pollution
INSIDIOUS | CORRUPTING | ADAPTIVE
An egg laid outside the territory of the eleven elemental gods will not hatch: without their magic, soul never knits to body and the embryo inside withers and dies. Without an anchor, the little waiting spark of Mind that might one day have become a person slips away through the cracks in reality. Most are eaten by the pneumavores that lurk in the hungry Void outside, but a few--lucky or clever or both--survive and grow up to become predators themselves. Shade-touched, these lost souls lurk in the dreams and nightmares of dragonkind, feeding on their fears and growing fat.
The largest of them are the greater horrors, dream-beasts without an identity beyond their Names--the specific terror they draw strength from. Most horrors are little more than beasts, unconscious and unaware of the minds around them, though they ably ape the manner and speech of dragons they meet while dreaming. The larger they are, the more they resemble thinking beings, though the veneer of intelligence lies only skin-deep over a terrible animal cunning. Sleeping dragons caught and seduced by a wandering horror might never wake again, trapped beyond saving in their own nightmares--or worse, awaken possessed, without dreams or mind or reasoning of their own.

There was a sort of awful symbiosis between the Fear of Pollution and the Nature clan it had taken residence with. Perhaps a tenuous truce at best, both sides thought themselves to be the one at advantage. While the clan tolerated the Horror to better study its connection to the Shade without personal risk, the Horror fed off of the fears buried deep in the dragons' minds. Even though most would not outright display it, the Fear of Pollution knew that internally they fretted over the taint that came with it.
Seeping black sludge dripped off its tendrils endlessly, to be drawn back up from whatever parts touched the ground, equal parts oily residue and noxious tar. Surely this couldn't be good for their land, the dragons asked each other in hushed tones. Still, their patriarch held fast to his decision. To know one's fear was to take control of it, and anything they could learn from the beast would be well worth whatever minor cost to the land it caused. To think they could control this particular fear, this Horror, was inaccurate. Still, the clever monstrosity knew that if it just kept its mouth shut, and bode its time, it would grow fat off their misconceptions, their collective dread. This was an agreement it could be content with.
