Crest had always been the odd-one-out. His siblings were stronger--faster--braver--fiercer--always better than he was at something, at everything, it seemed! He took to hanging back with others in the pack when they roamed, searching for new lairs, hunting for food, running for the thrill of running--mirrors always. always. traveled in packs. A mirror without his clan was a mirror without a plan, his mother always said... so he stayed, he learned, he watched.
And the watching made him clever. He began to play tricks, to learn how far he could push before the other dragon snapped, to pull strings until suddenly his brother and sister favored him more than they did the other. He pranked. Twisted words. Lied. Until his clan had, finally, enough, and cast him onto a desolate, arid plain with only his wits left to guide him.
The heat of the hot sun, the chill eye of the moon always looming, the silence of being truly alone as he trekked from one edge of the wasteland to the far one... is it any wonder Crest took companionship where he could find it?
Not from lesser creatures, no. Food was food and a dragon must eat... yet as he roamed he started to hear whispers in the grasses, murmurs on the breeze and the sense that he was followed. And his mind that was oh-so-clever, oh-so-sharp, started playing tricks on him! For what else could it be when, out from the dust, a spectre of mauve and violent and an unworldly grin grew and greeted him by name.
At least, that's what he swears every time he retells this. The smoke embraced him, and changed him, marring his skin into the ethereal patterns he still keeps this day. And his spectral companion has stayed at his side--though the clatter of his jawbones can't be understood by the other dragons he now calls friend.
