"A memory," he whispered, watching his feathered companion somersault in the air above. "Or maybe a dream. I can't always tell the difference, anymore."
Iliana chirruped, playing with the rings that decorated the edge of his wingsail. "Does it matter which one? Either way, it's not a part of your life now."
Famfrit resisted the urge to growl. She didn't mean to be dismissive; he knew she didn't understand the way the visions plagued him. Another world, another way of life, so real he could have sworn he'd lived it, yet so different it couldn't have ever been.
"The Behemoth sings to me, you know." He crossed his forepaws, tilting his head as his mate nestled against his neck. She was delicate and dainty, even compared to him, one of the smallest in the clan. Yet he was fierce, and none of the others--save some of the Imperials--ever questioned his leadership. He wasn't the eldest, but he was close, and he'd seen many come and go. He'd seen hundreds called from their nests to the skies, destined to serve their Mother, their Keeper.
Iliana giggled. "Does it now?" she asked as she righted the bandaging over his newest injuries. He wondered if they would leave more scars. "What does it say?"
He exhaled, the swirling violet shadows of his eyes growing just a little deeper. "The same thing all of it says. Another time. Another place..."
