"Maybe it's not about the happy ending, maybe it's about the story"

______ Viridios burst forth from the roots of a tree, fully formed, and looked about with curiosity and wonder. He found himself in a warm sunny glade near the edge of the sea. In the distance, further inland, he saw a massive tree. In his heart, he knew that it was his destiny to move towards that massive tangle of branches, but not just yet. First, more than anything, he wanted to explore his surroundings.

He wandered down the beach, enjoying the feel of the sea breeze ruffling his silky pale fur and his glorious purple mane. He rounded a large tumble of rocks and came upon another dragon, much like himself, who was staring despondently into the water at her reflection. He felt an immediate connection to this dragon, as though they were meant to meet. He approached slowly and sat next to her in the sand. "Hello" he said brightly, "What are you doing?".

______ This other dragon looked up at him with huge green eyes and said sadly "Look at me! I'm hideous", and she slumped down in a heap on the sand.

Viridios replied "Hideous? I think you are glorious! You are so brilliant to look at, like one of the birds in those trees over there."

The other dragon said "I'm orange! Why would the Gladekeeper make me like this? How can I live here amongst the trees when I stand out like this? I wish I could just blend in so nobody would notice me."

"I'm Viridios", said the white dragon, "What is your name?"

The orange dragon closed her eyes for a moment, as though she was listening to a voice only she could hear. "Chloris." she said, "Glademama says my name is Chloris."

Viridios vowed to himself that he would do everything in his power to make this dragon smile..

After many weeks of travelling around the edges of the Everbloom Gardens, Viridios sensed it was time to move deeper into the woods, towards the giant tree at the heart of the forest, and away from the exposed beaches. He knew that his companion, Chloris, preferred the shelter of the woods. He didn't blame her. He'd seen her sitting on the beach, looking across the sparkling water when dragons from the Shadow realm across the bay would fly over and mock her for her brilliant colors, telling her that she would never belong anywhere. He knew these words hurt her, he saw it in her eyes. She never complained though.

Whenever Chloris went off on her own to explore the forest, Viridios spoke with anyone he thought might help him. He wanted to find a way to give Chloris her greatest wish; to make her blend in to the trees and leaves. He learned spells to create magical scrolls that would let him change the appearance of any dragon. Chloris allowed him to try one of his scrolls on her. It added some spots and stripes to her orange fur, but did little to dull her brightness. She told him that it was an improvement, but quietly expressed her desire to be green, like the leaves of the tress she so loved. Viridios knew that the ability to change colors was beyond his skills, but he would keep learning for her.

One day several weeks later, he met an old Coatl mage. Luckily, the Coatl spoke Draconian quite well, as Viridios knew very little of the Coatl tongue. The old mage was in possession of a book of spells which would help Viridios learn what he needed to be able to change the appearance of a dragon more drastically, even to the point of changing the colors of their skins and fur. Eventually, he may even learn to change their entire appearance. He told the Coatl about Chloris, and how he wanted to make her happy, begging for help. The Coatl had the skills to do what Viridios wanted, but he saw in the creature before him great potential. The Coatl refused to change Chloris for Viridios, but instead gifted Viridios with the book, so that he may learn for himself how to help her and others. Viridios was immensely grateful for this gift, but at the same time, he was somewhat saddened that he could not help Chloris immediately. The Coatl saw the conflict in Viridios' eyes, and bestowed upon him a second gift: a magical cloak that would change the appearance of anyone who wore it. The cloak mimicked the wearer's inner vision of the way they felt they should appear. As Viridios joyfully rushed away to give the cloak to Chloris, the Coatl said to the woods around him "Gladekeeper, there goes your next great Mage. Give him the strength to continue on his journey, and you will not regret it."
