T H E__R A V E N__Q U E E N
Spinel hatched alone in the darkness of the Foxfire Bramble, protected deep beneath the roots and thorns. Though she was offered a home among several clans hidden within the Bramble, the soft distant glow of Wispwillow Grove beckoned. She took the offered kindnesses of the Foxfire clans as she made her way to the warm biochemical light of mushrooms and fireflies. After early journeys through the surrounding realms, Spinel established her clan beneath the Foxfire Bramble once more. Though a few choose to live elsewhere, most have made spaces deep beneath roots and soil, headed down toward the bedrock. The Raven Queen is arrogant and quick to anger, but well loved by her clan in spite of those flaws. Moreover, Spinel is fiercely territorial, prone to attack first and ask questions later. As such--and in the interest of maintaining the safety of her clan--Spinel cedes battle and defense to her commanders and lieutenants lest she disrupt otherwise peaceful dealings with her neighbors. Venge is of the opinion that Spinel needs to join their skirmishes with the beastclans more often.
"You're starting to look comfortable being the lazy birdskull queen. You're lucky I love you or I might let Anthus have a go at the throne."
"You know, you're lucky I love you or I'd send you on a one-way trip to Mother myself for that lazy comment." "Ah yes, there she is! Spinel, the raven queen of idle threats."
Her fickle nature is balanced by the depth of her compassion and affection, and her willingness to fight for the dragons who follow her.

Birdskull masks were inspired by the Corven Talonok residing in Wispwillow Grove. Impressed and awed by their zealous pursuit of spiritual magic, Spinel spent as much time driving away Corven impinging on her space as she did quietly studying them. Somewhere along the way, the morbid delight of donning their skulls became something of a standard among her clan. Atheris was the first to follow Spinel's lead and wear his own birdskull, encouraging and demanding in turn that his underlings did the same when in combat. With the arrival of Morpho to the clan, the birdskulls became more intricate, resembling the tradition of the harpies and their masks. Those who can fashion their own do so, though many settle just fine with wearing unmodified birdskulls. Several of the clan dragons delight in customizing birdskulls, and for them to create one for a fellow dragon is an act of deep import. Spinel's birdskull was created by Morpho herself, with some additional modifications from Sazerac. Each new dragon who joins combat ranks presents Spinel with a bead or bauble to adorn her mask. The most loyal dragons choose to fashion their own unique pieces for Spinel's mask, though dragons who lack craftsmanship will often borrow or scavenge a meaningful piece of personal significance instead. |

Spinel tolerates the bogsneak interlopers because their presence tends to deter unwelcome guests and enemies. The first line of defense for the lair is the Wildclaw division of her birdskulls. They keep to the edges of the lair, in various states of patrol. No dragon becomes a member of the clan without passing the initial approval of Morpho and Glow. Morpho grew up in the clan close to Spinel and Venge, and she is among Spinel's closest companions in her inner circle. Glow the Refugee, as the others have come to refer to him, came from a collapsing clan which lost its progenitors. He has made quite the impression on both Morpho and Venge, and therefore Spinel as their favor is not easily gained. Spiral: Spinel loves her noodles. If not for Atheris and his birdskull, her warriors would be a fraction of their current ferocity. Sazerac the Tinkerer takes care of their various needs, cosmetically and functionally. He has a penchant for transformations and gene tinkering (hence his name), and he deals with Baldwin on Spinel's behalf. The Raven Queen couldn't tolerate him as a Pearlcatcher and has about as much interest in dealing with him as a Bogsneak. Of all the dragon breeds that have come and gone, Venge is the sole Ridgeback in the clan. Her two sons who remained until their dragonhood left in service of the Shadowbringer, and no other has attempted to find a place among them. Venge is the Right Hand of the Raven Queen. Her reputation surpasses all others in the clan, more feared than even the Horsemen. Most of the clan steers clear of her, though she tends not to venture out terribly far from where she nests near Spinel. The pair of them rather enjoy the misguided conclusions drawn from Venge's aloofness and reclusivity. Coatls amuse the Raven Queen. Vasant was such an unexpected delight, she gladly accepted them into her clan. They are growing in significant numbers among her dragons though, and she feels bad for Vasant, being the only one competent at communicating with her. Skydancers make up a contingent of Spinel's special forces. The horsemen are friendly, but in whispers beyond the clan they are the stuff of nightmares: the sign of the Raven Queen's approach. On the rare occasion she goes to battle with another dragon's clan, her horsemen scout ahead to weaken the lair. A few other Skydancers remain in her clan, but most come and go rather vagrantly from her territory. Pearlcatchers are not tolerated in the clan, except as fodder for Shadowmama. Spinel doesn't abide their pretension or cowardice. None of her clan can figure out quite why she remains so averse to their kind, and she is known to evade discussion of the issue. Spinel is deeply suspicious of the goings on in the Sunbeam Ruins, and of Pearlcatchers in partcular. She finds their pearls unsettling and their cowardice appalling.
