Biography

N E P T U N E
Librarian - Philosopher

35lases.jpg Even as a hatchling, Neptune was never really interested in playing with the other kids outside. He would rather read a book full of stories; not really fairy tales and fantasies - though he knew all of them too, but history and science. He would always hold a book or a scroll in his hands, it was the only thing he was interested in, and as long as there was some paper in the near, he had everything. He didn’t care about food and didn’t strive for adventures like the other hatchlings did - no wonder everyone thought he was odd. But Neptune didn’t pay attention to them, he just continued to read.

One day, upon finishing a book, he looked up and couldn’t see his clan anywhere. “Well, this isn’t that surprising” he mumbled to himself, “but why on the Southern Icefields of all places.” Not that he cared much for his clan or food, but he didn’t to die yet, at least not there, so he set out to find the nearest town or market where he could sell his knowledge for food.

That was where he met three traveling dragons: Primoris, Jarna, and Elturgard. Neptune just happened to know some quite specific lore of the First Age and the Icewarden that the travelers needed. Jarna and Elturgard pitied the orphan, and considering that he, or rather his knowledge might be useful later, Primoris also agreed to take him into the clan. Eventually they found out that the only thing he knows is reading, but at that point they could not shake him off, and he really proved to be useful at interacting with other clans. He survived with the clan until they found their way into the Fortress of Ends and after they founded their own town he was elected as an Elder, one of the leaders of the town, the Passus.
After settling down he demanded that a library should be established, where he now works and lives, gathers knowledge, solves problems and writes papers about philosophic questions. The newcomers of the town have ambiguous feelings about his high rank, and those who do not visit the library may not even know about his existence, but even the visitors are clueless of the great part he plays in governing the community, despite the reserved (and rather invisible) lifestyle he leads. COMMENTS
Members of the Passus were asked for their opinion about Neptune
Primoris wrote:
Neptune? Ah, that useless one. Really, he never does anything, just sits in his tent all day reading some old papers and books. He can’t even fight! Or rather, he would trip in a small stick before he could even face his opponent. Pathetic. I told him I don’t want to see him in this clan but somehow he managed to survive with us. Honestly, he’s a real pain.
Jarna wrote:
Well, Primoris doesn’t really like him. At first I thought that it would be good if he came with us because he is very clever. He also liked Primoris’ ideas and decided to have faith in her and in Icewarden. So he came with us but it turned out that he can’t fight or protect himself, so he almost slowed us down while we were traveling through the Southern Icefield. He has a great knowledge, though.
Elturgard wrote:
I would rather not speak about his fighting abilities, but he is a master of lore. One of the wisests, if not the most sagacious.
Arba wrote:
Hmm… I am his apprentice so I should not be one to judge him, but if I have to say something about him, then I could not emphasize his knowledge enough. For example, he knows every story, let it be history, legends, myths, even tales. But if you go up to him he will figure out you whole personality in just 2 minutes, sometimes even things that even you yourself don’t want to admit. And he really thinks through everything, with logic and objectivity, so if you have a problem, you can certainly help, especially it has to do with politics, strategy, economics or sciences. This is why he is in the Council of the Elders.
Although he doens’t really seem like a great person; hatchlings even refen to him as the mad philosopher. Well, I can see why. I should help him in his research, but really, most of the time I am just trying to clean the mess he makes on his desk and organize the books and scrolls. And honestly, if it wasn’t for me he would be already be dead, probably. He can go days studying some matter, without moving out of the tent or eating. He would also miss every meeting.
But even if he’s like this, when someone has such a knowledge… I can’t not admire him and love him in a way.
