What was a life without the thrill of danger, and the dreams of limitless skies surrounding the lands? After all, living free of a direct influence on the peoples of the land inherently held the potential for endless discoveries and possibilities. This was the idea that a Coatl monarch had been attempting to plant in his daughter’s mind, even with his lover’s choice to devote herself to a deity cementing the girl’s dreams of legendary battles and the serving of justice within Sornieth’s lands of splendor and glory. Every waking moment, the girl would claw at the straw effigy of a Snapper she’d made with the scraps of fabric deemed ‘too filthy’ for her. Things were looking up for a time, seeing as the small clan prospered. Mercenaries were hired and given gifts of golden jewelry and the finest silks in the forest.

Ah, the life of a princess- how boring could it be? As it turns out, extremely so. The mercenaries were bribed with promises of the finest things in the land, and a particularly greedy few insisted on doing absolutely everything for the princess. Keita was, inevitably, forced into her glorious room, with nothing but shelves upon shelves of tomes and the occasional plush toy. Hatchling items she’d long since outgrown, in the grand scheme of things. Every single page had been read through thrice at the absolute least, and the so-called ‘Crystal Skull’ who desired to craft her into the perfect ruler heeded no desire of hers, unless it pertained to his land- his land, rapidly deteriorating, as the two caves they had used as their rooms were the only ones tended to, after clanmates opted to abandon them in search of adventure.

Oh, how Keita wished to chase them, to throw away all that she was supposed to be. She envied her mother, a proud Wildclaw who saw herself more fit to the ranks of the Lightweaver’s entourage; her own scales matched the sunrise the two so adored observing, even if the heat the star caused later on in the day was worthy of the thought of ‘moving to the Southern Icefields’. Was it because of the bickering between her parents, the arguments over what she should be when she’s older, that the beloved matriarch left? Perhaps. Though she felt awful for potentially being the reason a relationship was severed, she was also overjoyed to aid her mother’s decisions- even if she ended up trapped inside this gilded cage.

Upon the sunset of a particularly lovely day, the lush forests obscured from view by the masses of Ridgebacks ‘hired’ by the Crystal Skull. They were hardly even qualified for their jobs- lounging about the land, the nerve of them! As she turned to head outside and speak to them, though, Keita’s father stopped her in her tracks, gently urging her back in the direction of her room. Teeth were bared, as she reluctantly walked back, but stopped as soon as she caught the scent of another presence...something...large? It was masked well, laying under the layer of mold the lair had acquired, but it was there. Pristine silks shifted slightly within the stagnant air, tossed about by the mystery. The princess turned around, her father raising a metaphorical eyebrow at this act of defiance.

“Keita…? Is there something you wish for? It is time for you to rest, so make it quick.” The famed leader quietly leaned forwards, attempting to find the emerald green eyes concealed beneath the veil. No, she desired freedom and justice for those her father had wronged, above all else- despite all efforts for her to be shielded from the rather unsavory past he held, certain mercenaries were quite keen on gossipping, especially the pack of Mirrors that were occasionally stationed outside of her room. One, dubbed ‘Alonsia’ by the others, had guarded one of her siblings prior to her exaltation- she was an older dragon, but found telling stories of battle rather invigorating despite this- and she was, perhaps, Keita’s closest friend within this.

The pack hadn’t been seen for a while, and the lone Skydancer refused to speak of it.

“No, I...do not wish for anything, Father. I simply have a question to ask you, and it’s one you’re sick of hearing. Why can’t I explore the wilderness anymore? Mother and I used to do it all the time, and you, at least, tolerated it! Now you…” A pause, a hesitation; things that a princess was not supposed to exhibit, clear in her nervous voice. She sighed, playing with the jewelry adorning her plumes. “...Now you lock me away and prevent me from seeing the territory that I am supposedly inheriting. Is there something you fear that makes you so intent on locking me up, like some artifact worth millions? Do you really think I’m so special that I have to stay inside this moldy cavern?”

“...Am I just...not allowed to be myself and explore? You don’t even care for me, do you!?”

He appeared offended by the statement, just as expected. Perhaps she was wrong in believing there was love besides that of someone adoring a trophy, or a pile of gold- without her beloved mother, he resorted to taking care of Keita like a piece of glass that the wind could shatter with its power. The words, the tangent he appeared to go off on, went absolutely unnoticed by her; Keita had found the assassin slinking around the room rather amusing, and sent a curt nod his way, before returning to attention. Luckily, she had always found herself an intimidating presence, and as she took a step forward, her father stumbled backwards- straight into the path of the masked invader.

Small talk was made with the Coatl who forced the outgoing, cheerful princess into the isolation typical of a killer queen, before the attacker in question made his move. The way crimson dyed their fur...well, it was rather lovely, in a strange way. The stench of a corpse would soon dirty the prized room, prompting the silks to be stolen away from the walls layered with shimmering dust, blinding Keita when exposed to the fading rays of sunlight. As she explained her lack of initiative, she found that the ashen Imperial wasn’t as stoic as once thought...at the very least, she was acknowledged, and presumably asked to disarm the traps. Long as they hadn’t been moved, certainly, there was no issue...save for the arrows lodged within the sleek scales of her new acquaintance. Evidently, his pain tolerance was much higher than first anticipated.

“Are you alright?” The question is asked to the Imperial by the princess, and to her by a Ridgeback, whose name was lost to her. Keita rarely saw the guards, unless stationed by the cavern’s entrance, after all, causing unnecessary conflict when wishing to be social. When the blood-stained dragon walked off, she turned to the larger dragon, quietly asking him to lean down so she didn’t have to shout the news to everybody in the vicinity. As she spoke, words gentle, yet full of revelation- “Father’s dead,” “You’re free to leave,” “Goodbye,”- dripped from her maw, the exact voice her father would have wanted her to use to get her way with these unruly soldiers.

She, however, saw no issue with them. It was out of painstaking habit, etched into her conscience.

Making a mad dash towards the assassin, wings pointed straight behind so as to deftly dive through the overgrowth surrounding the lair, Keita slid to a stop at a Fae’s merchant stand, where he seemed to be conversing with the owner. Both of them turned their heads to glance at her, and the small dragon seemed to be considering something for a brief moment before flapping her tiny, tiny wings, and settling ‘pon the Wildclaw’s head, taking care to avoid the jewelry.

“I knew you would accomplish this work, Layak.” So that was the assassin’s name…? It sounded rather foreign to her, though, everything did at this point. Aside from that information, she found the rest asinine in all aspects, as her thoughts drifted to nothing and her claws were placed upon the merchant’s head, out of boredom more than anything. There were, after all, many things to see in Sornieth- why focus on trivial matters, when there were so many other things to do, places to explore, and people to set on the correct path. The Fae asked if she was alright, with the strange fin twitches typical of the species, prompting a dazed reply.

“...Yes, I’m just fine.” Keita sighed, before beginning to wonder out loud. Her room was...quiet. Devoid of life, unlike the meadow they’d found themselves in. “...I wish to battle away the corruption plaguing our kind...what’s your name, again? Layak?” Once the assassin laid his head upon the grass-covered forest floor, she flinched slightly, causing the merchant to jump for a moment, before settling down. “...You, er, scared me.”

Layak, amused by the girl’s reaction, tugged down the mask concealing a sharp, toothy grin. “...You can follow me, if you really want to, though I’m no hero, by any means. The place I stay when I’m not on a job is...it is friendly. As long as they see that you are not corrupt or consumed with thoughts of the past, you’ll be fine.” Nodding, Keita picked up the Fae and placed her upon the roof of her small, small stand, where she began to make preparations for further journeys into the wilderness. After all, her wares were running low.

The princess- no, queen, now- sprinted back over and began to take a look at the wounds her new friend had acquired from infiltrating the lair. Arrow wounds littered his body, eliciting a noise of concern which sounded rather like a Coatl’s vocalizations. As she began to tug them out, she continued to speak, taking note of the stars glimmering above. “You may not be the hero, but if I go with you, I can...I can see the world, I can help, and...well...I can find somebody that I can relate to. Can I learn with you…?”

Affirmation was given with a quiet ‘yes’, followed by the slightest indication of discomfort when Keita ripped out the final arrow. He stood up, glancing towards the smaller dragon, before pulling his mask back over his snout and pointing a sharp, crimson-stained claw towards the distance. Towards the territory of the Shadowbinder.

“...Let’s head out. We’ll make it there by tomorrow afternoon.”
