Silently, the Pearlcatcher gazes into the swirling orb resting on the cushion before her. It is no mere crystal she gazes into; it is a Pearl, carefully built and tended, cast upon by her own unique magic. Recollection. That was her magic. Born upon an early spring day, the hatchling was named for the phenomenon that typically heralded the season. Yet it was to be a more auspicious moniker. For the child possessed unusual skills, and was able to See into other Planes of existence. Most of the time Equinox could only see vague, shadowy shapes - ghostlike apparitions that others could not perceive. This talent caused others to regard Equinox as strange at best, and she was often avoided. The other younglings avoided her. So she came to develop hermitlike habits. Rather than shun her talent as many might have done, the Pearlcatcher developed the skills that caused her so much grief in her social life. She tamed the talent, learning how to invoke it at will rather than allow it to run rampant. The damage had already been done, though; those that knew her still avoided her. So Equinox turned to the one thing she had, and spent her days watching those that didn't exist to others. She discovered over time that she could focus her Sight through her Pearl. The images came clearer, then. Upon the equinox itself she was able to speak to the images, almost as if they were real. They were real, to her. It wasn't until she came across another dragon that she learned what they truly were... It was a sunny afternoon. Equinox rested beneath the shade of a tree, the light filtering through the leaves dancing patterns on her hide. She was, as usual, alone. Intent on images playing through the mists of her Pearl, she only half-noticed the other dragon come up to her. "Who are you watching?" Equinox looked up, ears going back. A Snapper stood before her, bedecked in various feathers, beads, and bones. She wore a horned skull over her head. It was a bit strange, but who was Equinox to talk? For all she knew, that breed of dragon dressed that way. "I'm not bothering anyone here, no one was around for miles until you showed up," she started defensively. Then what the other dragon said clicked. "Wait... what did you say?" For the Snapper had said "who are you watching," not "what are you looking at?" As though they knew she could see something and that it was an everyday occurrence. Equinox's ears perked forward. "You... know what I can see?" And so it was that Equinox came under the tutelage of the Shaman Eurdolgrol. She learned that her talent was not some freak thing, but a Power that allowed her to communicate with those in other realms of existence. It was a power that she could invoke at will, unlike the Shaman, who had to Trance to do it, but it had its limitations, for though her powers grew, as she already knew, upon the equinox, they waned upon the solstice. tbc...
