Biography
The river of wailing. The underworld is no place for those of flesh and bones, neither is it a refuge for lamentations or poignancy. Souls of those long departed and aimlessly lost find their place of mourning in hell. To put it simply, they have no other final stop than this one. Rivers snake their path through this vile realm, their bodies crashing and swishing as they conquer and intertwine with one another. Cocytus, the first, is the one that is made from the living’s tears, tears of guilt and woeful hurt and distress, which he gathers from those grieving a close loss. His shimmering waters are exactly that; salty prayers of those swathed in suffering. His soulless and hard-bitten facade is no indicator of what he is within. There is no malignant ire or malevolent intent residing in his core, not at all. His existence is a puny one, an easy one, solely to carry out the destiny that was passed onto him at birth. Fate demanded that Cocytus took upon his back those corpses of the diseased, with utmost care, and carried them onward to the underworld where their judgement would take place. In his eyes this is no flimsy feat. Doleful misery punctures his being with each dead swayed by his waters, crestfallen agony stabs at his soul whenever a droplet of a tear falls into him. He doesn’t let it show, but he is encompassed by a pain he is not meant to understand or relieve. Like a frozen mice trapped in the maws of a hungry serpent, he must utter no piece of his mind and rather continue with his burden. Although, he is not by his own. Another river flows by his side, Acheron, into which his waters merge and follow on the path that this one carved. They are at peace with one another, an indifferent but compassionate bond that they are obliged to share. Then, that which Cocytus bares on his waters with a crushing pain is cleansed by Acheron himself, tearing away the pressure and wounds that the river must face. A strange but sensible gratefulness maintains the river of wailing in his ultimate duty, knowing that soon enough his waters will reach Acheron’s and he’ll bear a lighter scar on himself. |
