Letter To A Hatchling |
|
My Dearest Yohualticetl,
I wept when I received your letter. It was such a relief to know that my little girl had found her way safely to a new home. I am pleased to hear that they are treating you well there. I must be frank with you and tell you that hearing of your gift did not come as a surprise. Several factors have lead you to this path. Two days before you hatched, there was a fierce storm. It raged unrelentingly throughout the Icefield. Great winds ripped through the land, hurling vast amounts of snow. So much so that we found ourselves blinded by it. Most of us were out hunting for the day and those who stayed behind were young inexperienced nest guardians. By the time we found our way back to the nests, the snow had covered many of them and countess number of eggs had been cast about by the great winds. The nesting grounds were in chaos. Everyone was frantically searching for lost eggs and uncovering their battered nests. It was then that we heard the cracks overhead. Lightning struck in all directions. I had just uncovered our nest and happily accounted for both of my eggs when lightning struck one of them; you. I was horrified and certain you were dead. |
The storm eventually subsided, as all storms do. In its aftermath, 2/3rds of the nest were lost. a dozen adults were dead and another 8 were missing and to this day have never been found. Everyone mourned the losses but I. I had needed to think of my two eggs. I needed to tend you so I could forget my sadness and atone for my failure to protect you. That night and the following day were the hardest of my life. Your sibling's shell was whole but yours had a small crack. I had little hope for you. Even your sibling seemed a far shot: for many of the eggs that were due to hatch, never did. You brother broke through his shell first. He was weak but otherwise very alert and healthy. It was another tense 8 hours later when you poked your nose through your shell. You burst out of it with vigor and a ferocious appetite. You sprinted around the nesting grounds, investigating every hatchling you could find. We were in awe. Here was the one egg we had feared dead now a spunky little hatchling with more life in her then anyone had ever seen. When you finally found your way back to us after your exploration, your father noticed something odd. Your wings; they were the color of lightning. We took to calling you Spark. Perhaps it was this brush with death that has given you the abilities you speak of. Embrace your gift, darling. Let destiny guide you and never allow fear to stop you. We know you are meant for great things. We are so blessed to call you our daughter. Remember us always and know that we love you. Mom & Dad |
