  tales.
I.
She surveyed the Court of Mist from her place in the shadows.
It was the same as always at twilight. As soon as the sun showed
pink-red, the campfires were started. Earthy smoke, fried meat, and
rich sweetcake warmed her nostrils.
Foxfire glowed blue in the forest-line. Shadowy beings flickered in
the corners of her vision.
The twilight dancers bustled out of their tents and began putting
on a show, waving bright pennants in the fog. There were minstrels
fluting, and bards boasting of their great battle deeds to whomever
would listen.
Watching the dusky scene gave her comfort,
but also pleasure and longing. It would be hers. Someday.
II.
To others, the collection of tents and motely dragons would mean
nothing. She’d heard of great kingdoms built into vast cities, and those
would see her clan as a bunch of beggars.
To Sharasa, the Court was everything. Her widely-traveled mother was
the first to say that there was nowhere else in Sornieth like this. No other
place captured the happy-sad air of the Court, and few produced food,
clothes and liqueur like they did, even in the fabled Courts of Light.

As Sharasa slowly walked through her home, she nodded to those who
bowed to her.
Every part of her appearance was chosen to intimidate, from the ornaments
on her wings to the guise on her face. She knew she was still a bit small,
still growing, and she had tuned her diet and exercise to allow for
maximum buildup of her strength.
But beneath all of that determination, she knew there was a core of weakness.
She loved the Court of Mist the way a child loves a parent. She couldn’t
imagine living anywhere else. And she sensed that, deep down, the
Court of Mist was just as fragile as the other clans the bards talked
about—the ones wiped out by armies or disease. Sometimes she
dreamt, and in her nightmares she saw the Court of Mist falling.
She knew she had to do all in her power to stop that from happening.

Even if, for the moment, all that meant was grabbing a hunk of
fried meat from one of the campfires and settling down to hear
a bard sing; to build her relationship with her future subjects.
