Some would say that Cabernet’s infatuation with wine was determined from the moment he was conceived: surely a dragon with literal wine colors would come out with an appreciation for selections of the drink that were well-crafted. To those dragons, he would like to offer a huge “DUH,” though he does hold Dionysus at least partially responsible for his habits. If the old imperial didn’t have such a way with grapes, he’s fully convinced that he wouldn’t be in the position that he’s in.

Cabernet was a very small, quiet Skydancer upon his arrival, and something about that shyness drew the older imperial’s attention. The bundle of feathers was soon apprenticed to Dionysus, from whom he studied diligently…some might say too diligently, sampling the mixtures that his master was in the process of curating. More than once, this boy was found asleep in the wine cellar where, instead of checking inventory and reporting back on sales, he had worked himself into a barrel. (In fact, Dionysus has put forth the belief that Cabernet’s belly is wine-colored from all of the product he has consumed.)

For all of his grape-soaked interests, he is a dedicated student who very exuberantly grew out of his shell and often comes up with lovely combinations of flavors that, with Dionysus’ careful assistance, turn out to be big hits among the others. He has a very good taste for what does and doesn’t work (through what he calls his “research”), and has worked himself into being a trusted partner to, rather than apprentice of, the winemaker. They both believe that their profession is a very under-appreciated subset of science, as it’s a delicate mixture with measurements that must be kept in mind for an optimal result, and he occasionally likes to fancy himself as a scientist though Dionysus still refuses to let him wear goggles “unnecessarily.” Cabernet takes pride in being one of those who can say “if you love what you do, you’ll never work a day in your life.”
