Biography

Many stories are told about how Dream got her name. “She’s a bit spacy,” her teachers would bring up with mild concern, “She’s in her own world it seems.” More than once they caught her walking into a door or a wall with her head in a book, or simply just because she was looking off into the distance. Outside she could be found talking to bugs, or the wind and clouds. There was plenty for the other children to tease her about, but it never seemed to bother her much, perhaps, some speculated, because she didn’t notice at all.

Then one day one of the other dragons pushed her as she was walking, humming a tune. The others laughed and for a long moment she didn’t move, laying in the puddle of mud. The laughter died down and it was then that she spoke, her voice deep and smooth, with none of its usual bubbliness. “Your father does not know, what lies inside his head, it’s best you tell someone, for he will soon be dead.” Laughter met her again, but when the boy returned to school a week later, he was still sobbing. Derision turned to fear, and after that, the children left her alone, speaking of witches and curses. Still, the adults knew there was no way Dream had done anything to the man; it was merely a coincidence, he had been sick for a while and no one knew, and Dream was back to her usually bubbly and spacy self. As she grew, people simply began to accept her.

“That’s just Dream,” they would say with a fond smile as she walked past them with every jar of jam at the store, mumbling off some sort of checklist to no one in particular. “That’s just like Dream” they would chuckle when she bought the old rickety tower on the hill overlooking the town. “What’s Dream up to now?”they asked as she practiced flying circles through the clouds.

Then one day it happened again. The harvest party was in full swing, revelry and drink abound when out of nowhere there was a crack of thunder, and the lights dimmed, the band, confused, stopped playing, then through the stunned silence, Dream spoke: “When the moon is at it’s peak, neither waxed nor waned, the tide will flood so deep, this town will never speak again,” She looked severely at the crowd, holding their gaze.

Then they laughed. “Good one Dream! You almost had me for a moment there!” They dispersed, carrying on into the night, but Dream never returned their smiles. The next morning by all reports she had returned to her normal quirky self, but to those who looked closely there was urgency. “Will you build a sea wall?” She asked a mason one day. He laughed, patting her heartily on the back. “Still going on with that joke, eah?” Dream left, her brow furrowed. “Will you move to the hill by the full moon?” She asked a young mother. “Quiet with that nonsense, this joke has gone on long enough, you’re scaring the children!” but over time she only became more desperate until the townspeople refused to talk to her.

When the full moon came, there was a great tidal wave, and in that instant, the town was swept away. Dream sat on her hill, alone, tears of sadness and frustration running down her dark cheeks, shimmering in the moonlight against her scales. In that instant, all was lost. Then, she heard voices. “Dream!” “She was right!” She turned around. The group was so few, but still, there were some. Dream recognized the faces easily, the children she had grown up with, who had bullied her; the boy who had pushed her in the mud all those years ago. They were the only ones who had believed.

After that day, Dream was gone. The remaining survivors did not know where she had gone, and for years she wandered the countryside until one day she met a young imperial, such as herself. There was something wise about the man, and something wise within her responded. To him she gave her third prophecy, though none are sure what words were exchanged between the two, they both decided it was best kept secret, for now. He did not laugh, only nodded gravely, and invited her back to his clan. On most days Dream is lighthearted and quirky, making the children of the clan laugh with her latest antic, and the others smile with fondness as they wonder what’s going on in her mind. Though on some days she takes on a serious, distant look, and while most don’t know what it means, Baxil keeps her close, listening to every word she says.
