Shadetouched her clan whispered amongst themselves when Sartra was just an egg. The marks of it were subtle, but enough to make some dragons fearful, and full of hatred for a dragon that had not even seen the light of day yet. But as soon as she had hatched from her egg, she hadn't even seen the faces of her siblings before she was thrown out from her clan. Left crying out alone and in pain, she caught the attention of a young Imperial with a soft voice, and hardly older than her. Having no one else to turn to, and nowhere else she could go, she followed the serene Imperial.

For a long while with him she didn't feel much pain from The Shade. It was more like a dull headache that came now and again to make it difficult to gather or fight, but it was gone within a few hours. But they became more frequent and more painful, up until one day when she blacked out. She had blindly and savagely attacked an enemy while they were traveling, and when she came to all she could see was the blood of it all over her. For all this time she hadn't told Akhlys about The Shade that she had been born with, but now her secret was found out, and she fell to the ground in fear of abandonment once again.

But he didn't, if anything he may have been a little too forgiving of Sartra. In order to find a way to quickly quell these blackouts before they might hurt someone, they got in touch with a healer who was able to (somewhat reluctantly) provide medicine. So long as Sartra takes it as a headache arises, she's not a danger to anyone around her any more than a usual Guardian would be.

Having no Guardian to raise her as well, she wasn't introduced to the concept of a charge up until someone happened to mention it in their travels, asking what her charge was. Most Guardians instinctively know what their charge is when they see it, she was told, and yet she hadn't needed to take The Search to find it. The answer was obvious enough to her, she had spent all this time protecting this Imperial, what else could be her charge if she felt no need to leave him?

But their duo eventually became bigger, with another Imperial and a Mirror following them in their travels. The other Imperial named Ker was nice, she found him to be very friendly and liked to talk to him, but it seemed like Akhlys didn't like them talking for too long. The Mirror though, Erebus, she never trusted for a second, and was almost hurt when Akhlys brought him in. What could that Mirror protect him from that she couldn't? Even further of a problem was the job she had been given, effectively cutting her off from most interaction with the rest of the group, the job of a spy.

Sartra knew it was helpful, likely out of everyone she was the one easiest to blend in with the calm feel of The Fable, but being separated from her charge so close to The Murder, she spent most of her time in the cave that was provided to her by her 'new clan'. She waited for word of when she should return to them, and quietly observed.

When word of something interesting finally comes to her, it's in the form of something relevant to Sartra. The Fable announced their plan to move to The Tangled Woods, where her group is camping out nearby The Murder. Excitedly she takes off for her group to let them know the news, but while she is there, she curiously decides to try and talk to the healers of The Murder about Shadetouched medicine. This ends up going nowhere though, as she got lost in their lair, and found herself witnessing the hatching of a new Shadetouched dragon like herself. Fearful for the hatchling's safety, she is determined to protect it. But an old statement from the past comes to mind to haunt her.

You will know when you have met your charge.

She had, of course she had, but then here was this hatchling that she could not imagine parting from. These thoughts leave her with such conflict, but she keeps watch over the hatchling. The parents eventually arrived back at their nest, apparently they had been caught up in the commotion as The Fable had decided to go ahead with their plans to move before Sartra could warn the group. But she asked them about possibly continuing to take care of their hatchling, maybe even adoption, which they actually accepted to her surprise.

But it was rather bad timing. Sartra returned to her 'home clan' only to ready a bed for her new child, and advise Maestro of the problem with The Shade so he might help. But on her way back she overheard Cetacea, speaking of Imperial dead bodies in the depths of The Sea of a Thousand Currents. This was the news her charge had been looking for all this time, a lead that would give him exactly what he wanted.

She told him.

She watched the bodies surface from the depths.

The monster formed.

She lost her only reason for existence.
