The lightning dragons of the Shifting Expanse are used to life in the desert, and they know that no matter how much technology they invent, the desert is always sparse, and sometimes there is simply not enough food. That was the case for Joad's family. They had done all they could to survive in their home, but their territory had grown dried up and desolate, so they set off on a journey to find a fabled land of plenty where they would not have to worry about food again. Dragons were lost along the way. Some died; others chose to settle in clans they encountered on their journey, finding mates and adopting new families. Joad and a few others persevered, traveling north, navigating the landscape of the Sunbeam Ruins until they came to the eaves of the Tangled Woods, where the amount of plant and animal life astounded them. Surely they would never want for food in a place like this. Unfortunately all was not as it had been promised. The clan they joined had them work hard hunting and gathering food, but they were apportioned only a small percentage of it while the rest went to feed more established clan members. Her remaining family decided to eke out their meager existence there, but Joad was disgusted by the selfish shadow dragons and set off on her own.
