Found wandering in the deserts of the Outlands, Maksim looked as if he had been abandoned there by his clan and was in about the sorriest state a construct could be. All of his iron joints were creaky, he was scorching hot to the touch, and his fox fur coat was tangled and matted with sand. The other dragons who made up the ragtag band he was traveling with (who claimed to be a hunting expedition that had gotten hopelessly lost, though the truth of that was debatable at best) were dehydrated and overheated as well, so the clans of the Blixtrande split the dragons between them for medical care and a trip home to Fire, from where they had come.
While the rest of his clan mates had acted indifferently towards the Breakers, Maksim had, much to his chagrin, grown close to several dragons in the foreign clan. He knew what his Fire companions had planned for them- that their leader, a Skydancer with pale green eyes unsuited to his phoenix-like feathers, planned to take over the Schism for his clan, and that any dragon that stood in their way would meet an untimely end- and that gave him pause. Maksim's original plan was to allow the Fire clan to overthrow the Schism's government, and when their leader celebrated as he was known to do, Maksim would defeat the foolish Wind dragon. The Skydancer was a fool in the construct's mind, reckless enough to believe the magic here could make him a Fire dragon, and ignorant enough again to believe Maksim would never threaten his rule. After all, the leader believed the construct was little more than a sentient pile of bolts with a wisp of flame at its center, and would never guess what the Tundra was planning, let alone seriously consider that Maksim could or would go through with it.
But this new development changed all of Maksim's previous thoughts. Now he knew that if his clan overthrew the Schism, the dragons that had been so kind to him would likely die trying to protect their lands. He could let it happen, take that chance, but that seemed so wrong, so immoral. Or, he could challenge the leader now, though the Tundra would likely be defeated in his still weakened state.
Or, maybe, Maksim could tell the Breakers of the invading clan's plans, give himself up, and simply ask if they would accept him into their clan. Could that work? Or would he need a clan of his own just to be respected as a flesh-and-blood dragon would be?
