Ash's parents, Nocturne and Moriko, generally tended to be quite agreeable, but when it came to the decision of where it would be safest to raise their daughter, the small family was split. Nocturne felt that living with Gale Clan would be far safer than if the two parents tried to raise her on their own, while Moriko, being more cautious about Kai's vicious rule, wanted to raise Ash on the Zephyr Ascent, where most young Wind dragons are raised. Eventually, the two compromised and agreed to raise the young Ash in Nocturne's homeland, the Shrieking Wilds, until she was old enough to fight, at which point they would return to Gale Clan and their lives of thievery. Although Ash's life was certainly easier than it would have been had they stayed in the Reedcleft Ascent, her parents still raised her to the Wildclaw standard, to become a fighter and hunter first and foremost. The gentle Ash disliked her parents' more violent ways, but lacked the confidence to resist, and eventually, became a worthy fighter in her own right. One day, while out hunting for her family's dinner, Ash encountered a centaur; although she originally intended to stalk and eventually kill the centaur, she realized that it was injured, and decided to help it instead. The two became close friends as Ash nursed the centaur back to health, all the while hiding it from her parents. It wasn't long before Nocturne and Moriko found out about Ash's centaur ally, however; although they originally intended to kill the centaur, Ash persuaded them to leave it alone - but her family still refused to remain in the Shrieking Wilds any longer. They returned to the Reedcleft Ascent, where Kai welcomed back his old friends with open arms. Emboldened by her friendship with the centaur, Ash quickly grew more and more rebellious, advocating for Beastclan rights within the less accepting Gale Clan, and even went so far as to persuade Nyx, a Beastclan representative, to take up residence with the clan, much to Kai's disdain. One day, when Gale Clan attacked a merchant ship, Ash encountered a stuttering mage, Rhamnello, and, instead of attacking him as she was supposed to, hid him and smuggled him off of the ship, ultimately saving his life. Ash and Rhamnello met in secret for days, and then weeks, unable to resist the irresistible draw that pulled them together. Ash eventually introduced Rhamnello to Gale Clan; although his nature was more artistic than aggressive, the two decided that fighting side by side would be far better than meeting in secret. |
