The twisted result of one of Gleal's experiments, Alastor cheated death. In normal circumstances, he would be long dead. In fact, Alastor was dead for a number of months before his corpse was discovered by Gleal, although he cannot remember anything from his experience being dead.
Gleal cast a powerful, horrific, nature-defying spell, managing to bring Alastor back to life, more or less. However, Alastor's body could not be healed, thus he was stuck in a decayed, rotted body.

Upon his resurrection, Alastor, having nowhere else to go, and feeling slightly indebted to Gleal, joined the Weifeng Clan. He, being a corpse himself, saw no better role for himself than being the "Keeper of the Dead", or the clan's mortician. (He likes "Keeper of the Dead" more, it sounds cooler)
The Weifeng Clan traditionally cremates their deceased, taking some of their ashes, and making pendants out of it, which are then given to the dragon's loved ones. The rest of the ashes are scattered into the wind, so the fallen may continue their travels for eternity. Alastor took up the role to be in charge of the process, since before, the newly dead's loved ones had to do it themselves.
