Biography

Melomedies
The Merchant

Theme Song: Midnight Sway - Odd Chap

"What can I offer you? I have rare goods from all across Sornieth for sale, and I guarantee you've never seen the like."

Sornieth's Night Market is spoken of in whispers and snatches of overheard conversations. It consists of a loose collection of traveling merchants, who split, reunite, and part again, meeting across Sornieth to set up shop on moonless nights. Those who know where it is and those lucky, or unlucky, enough to stumble across it are greeted with a lantern lit procession of stalls and carts, goods piled temptingly high, but not so tempting as to be snatched. The merchants call at them from all directions, praising their wares and hinting at the even rarer goods kept hidden in their carts or behind their curtains. There for a single night and then gone, it's a place for those in the know to buy anything, be it never so rare, deadly, or forbidden. But those who go there had best keep an eye on their valuables, and look closely at what they purchase. It's all too common for them to find the next morning that what looked so pretty in the lantern light is dross by day, and the purse that was full when they came in has been mysteriously emptied. That's to say nothing of the fact that an unwary customer themself can disappear in the Night Market, vanishing as surely as merchants and stalls, and just as unlikely to be found.

Melomedies counts his allegiance partly towards the unnamed clan, and partly towards the Night Market. As one of the merchants who makes it up, he travels Sornieth, acquiring, by one means or another and not always honest ones, a variety of goods that it would be dangerous to buy or sell in any other market. As part of the clan, he counts their hidden lair in the Ashfall Waste both his home and his home base, and he offers them first pick of the goods he brings, the information he hears, and whatever else they ask that he can get his hands on. What he can't personally find, he can certainly find some fellow merchant capable of providing. He sometimes walks a fine line between his loyalties. The Night Market brings in what they wish, and sell to all who can buy. The unnamed clan seeks to protect the Ashfall Waste, and doesn't look kindly on those who put it at risk, or bring in the means for others to do so. Still, they're eminently practical, and recognize that something of the sort would happen one way or another, so it's best to have an agent in it to keep them informed.

A skilled merchant, Melomedies plies his wares with a silver tongue and an eye to whoever looks like they might need them. He works in the dark, and is usually seen only lit by the eerie glow of his own lanterns, and the foxfire light of his familiar, Poltergeist, eyes hidden by his trademark red fedora. However, his mysterious appearance is a cultivated one, precisely calculated to draw and intrigue, to make people wonder and draw closer to the charmer whose smile dances in the flickering light. He's a charmer, more often than not with a flower in hand to present to the ladies who seem torn about coming closer. It's best to watch however, because when his hands are empty, they might find their way into your pockets, if the ghostly touch of Poltergeist hasn't already been there. Despite his ways, he's never given the clan reason to doubt his loyalty, asking a fair price for his goods that he doesn't offer everyone, and keeping Poltergeist's roaming grasp (one with a very wide reach indeed, given the tendency of his hands to detach and float away) away from his clanmate's valuables.
