Biography

Misfits and outcasts fill a clan hidden deep in the dim light of the Wispwillow Grove, dragons shunned by the rest of the world. It is into this group of unwanted dragons that a child hatches. Now at least one of the clan is wanted, and the child grows up loved.

The clan raises Soga to be a survivor. The tragedy that befell them several years ago is always on their mind and they see Soga as a good omen. A sign that the clan is healing and growing to a brighter future.

For his part, Soga works hard for his clan. Like all kids do, Soga imitates the adults in his life. He learns how to fight, how to hunt and gather, and all sorts of unsavory talents from the outcasts of the clan who have no qualms about teaching a kid their ways. Soga grows to be a jack of all trades at a young age.

Hunting is his favorite activity. Not just monsters, Soga likes to hunt for food for the clan, to provide for them. There is no doubt in anyone's mind that the young Gaoler is going to be a seeker. His veal for finding shade-touched creatures and bringing them down is unrivaled.

Soga's future looks bright, until tragedy hits.

It happens while he's hunting. So focused on stalking his prey, he doesn't notice the ground giving way under him until it's too late. He falls into an underground river that's swollen with the recent rains, and is swiftly swept away. His cries echo in the darkness as he struggles to stay above the rapids, but his thick coat of fur threatens to drag him under. The current slings him this way and that, and his head erupts in pain as it cracks against a rock. He sinks into the depths, his world growing black.

His clan searches for him for days, but cannot find him. Their voices echo off the trees and all their queries are met with disappointment. They mourn the disappearance of their young son, lost to the woods that raised him.

When Soga wakes, he finds himself in such deep darkness that it frightens even him, a dragon born of shadow. He's soaking wet, his coat making movement slow and heavy and threatening to drag him back into the river he's half submerged in. Pulling himself out of the river is an effort, each movement causing his head to throb. After what seems like an eternity to him, he sits on the bank of the river, shivering in both cold and fear.

Something isn't right about the darkness down here, Soga thinks, it's much too dense and much too sinister. Necessity keeps Soga sitting there until he is at least somewhat dry, and only then does he start to explore.

He feels along the river bed, going against the current and staying careful not to fall back in. Perhaps if he follows the river, he'll find his way back. That hope is crushed when the river flows into a solid wall, preventing him from continuing without getting into the water. He turns his attention to the wall now, hoping desperately that he isn't trapped in a small room with only the river as an escape.

Luck turns out to be on his side as his claws find a passage he can walk through. He makes his way into the tunnels and into the suffocating darkness.

Days pass. Water and food is scarce and the going is slow. Soga smells various shade-touched creatures in the dark, but cannot pinpoint where they are. Every sound is frightening, every new smell a possible threat. Still, Soga soldiers on.

Instead of heading upwards, the tunnels seem to lead him down. Something moves in the dark, something large and Soga is forced face to face with something he cannot understand. The fear that grips his heart is unlike anything that he's ever felt before and it clears all thought from his head other than survival. He runs from the thing as fast as his legs can carry him, barreling through the tunnels, hitting walls in his haste, but still he runs.

The next thing he knows he's on the surface, flying hard and fast toward Wispwillow Grove. His clan rejoices at his return, but something isn't right. Soga's eyes glow now, as if something has burnt all color from them, and the spark of youthful energy has left him. Now he's listless, knowing of some secret danger underground that is so indescribable he refuses to speak about it. It's as if all hope has drained from the young Gaoler, and not even the thought of chasing down the shade can get him excited. Soga has lost his way in the world, and waits uneasily for the danger to surface.
