Biography
But oh--! What dark, lonely eyes. Tis a pity, you thought, for such a beautiful creature to be so sad. You venture closer, perhaps to offer comfort-- perhaps to admire.
The skydancer-- and it was a skydancer, you now knew, quicksilver and pitch blue-- drifted closer, rich silks trailing beneath her into the depths.
"Tis a pity," the lovely skydancer agreed, her fine head cresting above the waves. "The sea is big and I am so very small. Won't you stay with me?"
Had you spoken out loud? But no, that wasn't important. How could it be, you wondered, when she sounded so sad? Something ached in you. Maybe it was pity.
You looked past her, at the horizon and the setting sun. It was a mere sliver of fire, painting the low sky a soft pallet of orange and red, brushstrokes of warmth interrupted by the streaks of coming nightfall. It would be dark soon.
But not yet.
"For a little while," you finally say, creeping closer to stoop yourself on the edge of the docks. "But only for a little while."
She lets out a soft note, low and mournful. Your chest twinges.
"No longer?" She inquires, wading into your space. "No longer than a little while?"
You stare at her helplessly, uncertain as she lays a gentle hand on your arm. It was already dusk. Could you?
"It is all right," she soothes, tone threaded with disappointment. "You need not dispose yourself to me. I am but a stranger."
Shame itches at your scales. You can hardly think. Longer? Could you spare more time for longer? The path home was tricky, but... maybe if you were careful picking your way through the woods, you could avoid the nastier pitfalls.
"I--" you began, croaking. "I could... stay longer. An hour, perhaps?"
She smiles at you then, sharp and quick, and something inside you quivers.
"An hour is all I need."
