You find yourself wandering alone in the Gladekeeper's realm. It was early afternoon when you entered the forest, but as you make your way deeper into the foliage, you could swear it was midnight-- the wood is so dark here you can barely see the path in front of you. Just as you begin to wonder how you'll find your way back out, you catch the slightest glimmer out of the corner of your eye. Turning to face it, there's nothing there-- and then, the glimmer comes again.

It blinks in and out, illuminating the path in front of you. Another light appears a few feet away, shimmering in the dark. You walk towards it, and the forest goes dark for a moment, before another light, further down the path, beckons you onward. The trail of lights goes on for what might be minutes or miles-- until you find yourself deep, deep in the forest. You realize with a start that you are totally lost-- if you had a year, you still might not be able to retrace your steps. As you stand there, the lights that led you on begin to swirl around you, acting as a beacon for anything that might care to find you.

It doesn’t take long before somethings does. You stand your ground, ready to fight whatever it is that’s lured you here-- when out from the brush comes…. A cat? You whip your head around, looking for something bigger-- but all you see are trees. The cat comes closer.

You stand still-- the cat comes right up to you, and wraps itself around one of your legs.

“Hi?” You smile down at it, and it begins to purr. Out of the corner of your eye, you see a flash of gold. Before you can disentangle yourself from the cat, a spiral has twisted their way from the shadows. They smile at you.

“Well, hello there! How did you manage to find the entrance?”
They ask, patiently bobbing along in front of you.

You explain about the lights that led you here.

“Ha! I should have known,” they shake their head. “You should be careful on the way back-- the fireflies can lead you to danger just as well as they can lead you to safety.”

"Those were fireflies?" You ask them. "Why did they lead me here? Where is here? Who are you?"

The spiral uncurls and re-curls themselves in excitement. ”Why, you're in the frith!”

That doesn’t make the situation any clearer to you. You politely ask the spiral what a frith is.

“What's a frith? What's a frith?” Their eyes widen. “The frith is all around you! As far as the eye can see, the living dark.” At your blank look, they elaborate. “The trees! This is the deep forest-- the acherontic frith.

If you venture forward from here, you'll eventually reach the great tree of the Gladekeeper-- assuming nothing eats you first.”

The spiral taps one long claw against their chin.

"I suppose I could give you a tour-- in the service of you not getting eaten. I have deliveries to make, though-- no dawdling!"

"I never answered your first question, did I?"

The spiral straightens out of their many loops and coils, and bends themselves in half-- into a stiff, stiff bow.

"Allow me to introduce myself: Octavian Gilded-Scale. He, if you please. I suppose you can call me Tavi-- everyone else does. I'm lore-keeper for our clan-- unofficially.

Officially, I'm the clan messenger-- but if I snoop a little, who does that hurt? I just need to know for the records!" Tavi sniffs haughtily and shakes out his whole body again.

"I used to be a clan leader-- but that was all before we came to the frith.”

"You aren’t from around here?" You ask him. "How do you find your way around?"

“Oh no, we're not natives-- couldn't you tell? Gold eyes aren't much of an advantage in the dark,” He laughs. “No, we're from the ruins-- we were once devoted acolytes of the Lightweaver. It's a long story-- one I'm afraid I don't have time to tell. We have deliveries to make!"
