Biography
"The sailors on the salty sea, my brothers I will lead."
First Mate of the Seraphim
First Mate of the Seraphim
Her first night at sea, when Diadem had begun to have second thoughts about this journey away from home, Captain Saberhorn had taken her above deck, craning his neck skywards.
“See that?” he'd said.
She remembered the dome of cold, clear stars, mirrored in the Thousand Currents below.
“Didn't do much stargazing from the wasteland, eh? Well, feast your eyes!”
And feast she did, taking in all she could about the seafaring life—how to read the skies and the winds, how to taste a coming storm and chase fair weather, and most important of all, how to help keep their crew in order. Her highly attuned senses, honed by her experience as the clan's trapper and tracker, served her well at sea; Saberhorn eagerly took her under his wing as First Mate, and together, they tackled the seas and skies.
The ever-chivalrous, above-board gentledragon that Saberhorn was, Diadem soon found herself fascinated with her captain. Back at home, she'd never been the loudest fledgeling in her clutch; Varric, ambassador of the Southern Icefields and loving father, raised her with an Ice Dragon's characteristic sternness, and naturally disapproved of her and Saberhorn's supposed “gallivanting”. What she lacked in theatrics, however, Diadem made up for intensity—watchful, attentive, studious, and devoted to her work, she very soon captured Saberhorn's heart. Together, they make an odd pair during Saberhorn's fireside storytelling sessions, the captain regaling the clan's hatchlings with tales of his seafaring exploits while Diadem gently supplies corrections.
Though the sea has long become a second home to Diadem, she misses the clan just as sorely as the first time she left. Cecillian and Elliacen, in many ways, run their clan like a ship's crew—though rowdy at times, and motley, and sometimes a bit eager to brawl, they were all dragons whom Diadem would put her life on the line for. It was in her clanmates and crewmates that Diadem finds her strength, and with her newfound well of confidence, she and Saberhorn set out to conquer the waters and wastes alike.
