Biography

"Mal"
Ranger

Well you may throw your rock and hide your hand
Workin' in the dark against your fellow man
But as sure as God made black and white
What's done in the dark will be brought to the light
tumblr_inline_ocn5h76ybW1smdrbs_540.png The Aureate Citadel is a place dedicated to the pursuit and preservation of knowledge. From above, it doesn't look like much, a squat, single story stone fortress that hardly deserves the grand title. But what lies on the surface is merely the gate. The true entrance is the spiraling staircase that leads straight down, a dizzying array of marble steps lit by tiny glimmering lights. A vast and sprawling underground citadel, some inhabitants say that there are miles of corridors, leading to thousands of rooms, dusty and forgotten, holding unknown treasures. It holds living quarters to rival any palace's, libraries, museums, and even gardens, the darkness illuminated by Byzantium's magic.

Rumors of the Citadel's untold riches bring those who hope to gain a piece for themselves, whether by honest means or... less honest. Mallory, more often called Mal both for name and temperament, stands between them and the gates, and means to make sure that any who come in with the intent to stir up trouble go running like the devil's on their heels. The word of the Sentinel, the gate's most honored guardian who looks into their minds and sees their intentions, is law there, and anyone the Sentinel deems unworthy is run off in short order. Mal is no Sentinel, but still keeps a sharp eye on any and all allowed past the gates. The Sentinel's magic is admittedly imperfect, after all. But Mal can sometimes sniff out trouble the Sentinel misses. Anyone who looks more like they're casing the place than sightseeing, anyone caught with thief's tools or hidden weapons, sometimes those who just smell guilty (and Mal has a nose for guilt from a mile off) can spend a night in the cells unless they have a damn good explanation for it. And Mal won't hesitate to come down hard on anyone who shows their true colors once they've been made. If they behave, they'll get a fine and a few days labor as punishment. If they don't, they'll be sent limping off with lash marks warning them not to come back. Mal threatens to brand repeat offenders, but so far no one has dared to try it. (Or at least, dared and been caught.) Mal's partner, Connor, has expressed the opinion that the punishment can be harsh, but Mal asserts that they're living in a harsh land. The Citadel may be a glittering golden haven of light and learning, but aboveground is only the gate and the wasteland. The two of them aren't about to get invited down into the inner circle any time soon. As long as they're up here, it's up to them to make the law and keep it. And Mal damn well intends to keep it.

Mal and Connor defend the territory they're set to guard with a specialization in artillery magic. Able to summon anything from elementally charged shotguns to cannons, their combination of fire and ice has left more than a few smoking craters in the dust around the citadel. Mal specializes in the larger end of the spectrum, calling up massive cannons and setting the fortifications bristling with rifles, every one aimed at whatever intruder tried to get in without coming through the front door. Mal's hallmark is a big, blackened crater where a cannon shell landed, and there are more than a few left scattered around the place as a warning.
