Lore
He was a nearly pure white hatchling, shinning and glimmering, very proud of his colors, and very clumsy on his feet. While the rest of his siblings were graceful, this little hatchling appeared to have been born with two left feet, and an awkward sense of balance.
He was always dusty, or muddy, or covered in suds on washday…because if there was anything to fall into, he fell into it. But today, he had to stay clean. Today was his naming ceremony. Sometimes they had them, sometimes they didn’t, but this time, they were having a naming ceremony.
He had to keep himself nice and clean all day long, which to this little hatchling, meant not going anywhere or doing anything. So he sat. And sat. And sat. He couldn’t sit any longer. Momma said to stay. Momma said not to run off. But…Momma was busy getting everything ready for the ceremony…and she wouldn’t know if he ran off to have some fun.
He snuck out and was on his way. Pretty butterflies. Pretty flowers. The Windsinger was blowing some wind their direction. He could hear the gentle splashing somewhere from the Tidelord’s domain. Oh, what was that smell?! He followed his nose, then, crouching behind a bush, he watched two dragons working in a tar pit. Who knew that tar smelled like that?
Oops, why was he going that direction? The hatchling slowly started slinking toward the tar pit. He knew it was a bad idea…but…but…. The older dragons didn’t see him, they just continued talking as they worked, and he stretched out his nose and then PLOP.
He screamed. He was stuck in the sticky tar! They pulled him out and scolded him, but he got all the punishment he needed or could handle…the tar wouldn’t wash off, no matter what. He tried so hard to wash up before it was time to go home and go to the naming ceremony. So he hid. He wasn’t going to let Momma see him until it was time for his name.
He hid in the back as Momma stood up at the front, waiting for her children. One by one, they walked forward, by order of hatching, and when it was his turn, he stepped into the aisle and everyone gasped.
“My…my child!” His mother cried out.
He smiled sheepishly. “You’re…you’re tar covered! Oops!” She hadn’t intended for the name writer to write that down as his name, but he had misunderstood what the mother dragon was saying, and called out;
“Welcome, TarCoveredOops!”
His face fell. That couldn’t be his name! His mother cried and scolded him and scolded him and cried. She had had a wonderful name in mind for her little boy…but…she couldn’t just rename him, not without paying a fee, that is…and she didn’t have the money to pay a renaming fee.
Instead, he ran away.
The clan he went to was a clan full of mismatched dragons. Dragons with dark pasts, and joyous lives. Dragons that could barely stand any other dragon, and dragons that got along with nearly every dragon in the clan. And now he was there. Now, his true name was TarCoveredOops, but he introduced himself to everyone as “Tar”, which…wasn’t a lie, just a self-given nickname.
“Would you care to room with me?” A dark water dragon, one of the guards, named Murkwood, asked one night, as TarCoveredOops tried to find a place to spend the night.
“In…in the guard’s quarters?”
“That is where I sleep at night,” Murkwood smiled.
“Um…but…aren’t you worried I’ll break something?”
“I’m sure you aren’t that clumsy.”
TarCoveredOops roomed with Murkwood that night…and promptly broke his helmet. But for some odd reason Murkwood didn’t kick TarCoveredOops out, but rather took the little dragon under his wings, and trained him for battle, and guarding, and soon, TarCoveredOops had his own guard station, that he was responsible for protecting.
However…despite being a guard, there was a big long list of things that TarCoveredOops managed to break. Somehow, being a guard hadn’t trained the clumsiness out of him…but everyone loved him anyway.
