When he was born, there were whispers. Shade-touched. Terrible. Unspeakable. Sharp tongues and even sharper eyes followed him where he went, their words and stares stinging more with each passing day. Eventually he left his home Clan, carrying with him the burden of their accusations. Shade meant nothing to him then, but the way it was spat told him almost all he needed to know.

Still, he was curious. He sought the shade out, thinking that perhaps if he could learn more of it, he would learn more of himself. Others tried to dissuade him. He would not be swayed from his venture.

Eventually he succeeded in his endeavor. A sliver of shade, a mere tendril, wrapped around a stone caught his attention. His breath caught in his throat. He approached cautiously, ready to spring back at a moments notice.

It fled. The shade squirmed away from his presence, escaping into a small fissure in the ground. His heart clenched in his chest. Sickened to his stomach, he took to the skies without a second glance, letting his wings carry him as far as he could manage.

For if the shade, the very thing hated by dragonkind, could flee before him, what did that say about him?
