The day of her hatching had been eventful, though it was not intended to be. She remembers the day in fragments, and it pains her to recall them. She's only told one other soul about these memories, the one she regards as her own soul, the only one pure enough to see these memories and not fear her.

The first thing she remembers seeing was her sibling, once she had pushed the last bit of egg that was covering her face away. She saw bright pink eyes staring back at her, from a face that was just as bright pink to match it. Her first memory is of burrowing herself into the bright pink plumage of her sibling and falling peacefully back to sleep, laying in their nest.

Her second memory is less pleasant. The dragon she knew to be her mother, for she just knew these things, this dragon felt like home, so she was her mother, this dragon was looking at her like her sibling had, bright pink eyes staring. Her sibling had looked at her curiously, but her mother seemed concerned. She didn't know much about this world, but she knew that she didn't like to see her mother upset, so she went to nuzzle up against her. Her mother quickly pulled away from her. It was only then that she noticed her sibling had been taken away.

She remembered a lot of sitting in her nest, alone. The only thing with her was the egg she hatched from, as her side of the nest had been left completely untouched. She heard noises of other dragons, but she knew nothing of what they were talking about. She was alone, until her mother returned, along with someone she'd never seen before.

'Dierdre.' That was what they called her when they pushed her from her nest, and sentenced her to her solitude. 'Sorrowful.' That was what she was.

She didn't learn until much later, when she had met other dragons of her species, why she was rejected as she was. Apparently to coatls, pale coloring on a hatchling is a sign of sickness. At best, she was seen as an omen of death. At worst, she was sick, and had potentially tainted her family as well.

Whether she was actually sick, she never quite knew. She had some oddities and idiosyncrasies about her. She couldn't ever pay attention. Sometimes her body did things it just decided to, on it's own. And mostly, she was always deathly afraid to be around other dragons. See, this was why she never found out, she never let others near her. She considered herself contaminated, and lived in a self-prescribed quarantine.

On the few instances she did meet others, she had called herself Dierdre. It was the only name she had ever been called, it was the only name she knew. She settled herself near enough to another clan that she could reach help if needed, but far enough that she wouldn't disrupt them or, Arcanist forbid, ever cause them illness. The dragons of the clan didn't mind, they seemed peaceful enough. In fact, she gained a reputation within the clan, and was given the nickname "the Sorrowful Woman" by the hatchlings of the clan.

It wasn't until she had met a very particular dragon that she had actually let herself be sociable, as her breed is known for. He was a skydancer, and had colors very similar to her own, and she was very curious. She had noticed his arrival in the clan nearby, and she watched him from afar for days before she let herself approach him.

At first she would not allow herself to, as she was afraid of her illness spreading, but she had decided that since he looked like her, he must also be sick, so it was probably safe.

Her first questions were to ask about his illness, and to ask why the clan had not forced him out. He was very confused by her, but also very intrigued, so he answered every question she posed.

"This coloring is common in my family."
"I'm no different than others of my breed."
"The way I look doesn't reflect my health at all."

The skydancer, she had learned his name was Aurelia, was quite different than the other dragons she'd spoken with before. He was gentle with her, and seemed to genuinely care for everything she had to say.

He never denied her claims of being different. He never told her that she wasn't ill. He wasn't a coatl, and did not feel like he had any place to criticize their customs, even if he thought they were odd. But still, he challenged her. He told her that even if she was sick, she was not lesser for it. He told her that being different didn't make her lesser, or something to fear, it didn't make her an omen.

One day, he even told her it made her beautiful.

They spent more and more time together as they got to know each other, Aurelia slowly, softly courting her. Slowly, softly changing her perception of herself. She believed him now, when he said she was beautiful. She knew he meant it.

It took quite some time for Dierdre to accept her love, to believe herself worthy of his love, but she did. She formally took him as her mate, and he left his home in the nearby clan to den with her. He took care of her, and she was forever grateful for it.

Her mate called her many things throughout their life together, most of them quite affectionate. One thing he never called her, though, was her name.

It wasn't that he didn't respect her, and he would have changed immediately had she taken it that way, it was just that he didn't like it.

He didn't like a lot about her past, but he never completely berated it. She had a hard time resenting her family, and he understood that. Her name, however, he felt like was a punishment given to her.

He refused to call her sorrowful, he refused to see her as pitiful. He saw her with love, and he wanted to make sure she always knew that.

One day, as they lay in the grassy field near their den together, he was talking to her absentmindedly. She wasn't completely sure if he meant to be saying it out loud, as he was just softly speaking as he watched the sky, watching birds fly past.

"You remind me of a dove at times." Aurelia had said, causing her to look up from where she had been nuzzled against him.

"You look like one. Like a very pretty dove. Like, the most lovely of doves."

He rambled on for a minute, saying the same thing many ways, before her soft laughter interrupted him.

"You think I look like a bird?"
"I think you look lovely and... doveish..... you look dovely."
"Dovely?"
"Yes. The most lovely of all doves."

She hummed quietly and nuzzled herself back into him, going back to the soft pace they had previously set. That was the end of the conversation.

But the next time he brought her to see members of the clan, as they had taken to doing now, she was introduced as "Dovely."

The hatchlings joked about her name still, but the Sorrowful Woman was no more. There was a lovely dove living nearby, and she still drew quite the lot of curiosity.
