Launfal is the son of an herbalist and a shaman. His father, the herbalist, was known for his kindness and compassion. His mother was known for her power. His parents abandoned him at an early age. Both of them believed the path to true power was silence and contemplation in nature. He grew up without speaking, or without hearing another dragon's voice. Instead, he listened to the whippoorwills calling their laments at dusk, and the high hum of the cicada at brightest noon. One afternoon in late summer, he paused beside a lazy river. The statue of a female Skydancer was crouched on the bank. Bouquets of sweet red blossoms hung around her neck. Strangely, though the dragon was still and her eyes closed, something about her seemed - lifelike. He reached out with a curious claw and tapped her forehead. Her eyes opened. "Hello," she said. It was the first word he'd ever heard. Bewildered and afraid, he retreated into the cover of nearby trees. He watched in amazement as the statue got to her feet and sashayed into the shade, leaving blossoms behind. As he poked his snout out, she turned and beckoned to him. They walked slowly together down a shady path. "So, silent wanderer. It amazes me that no one's spoken to you yet. My teachers had an ancient saying, though - stay silent, and the Glademother fills your head." She gracefully arched her neck, expecting something. Enchanted by her musical voice, Launfal tried to speak. But nothing came out. At once he was heartbroken because he lacked the gift this woman had. He flushed, embarrassed. He didn't understand that low birdlike tone was her laughing - but did know that her talons felt very nice, resting on his cheeks. One doesn't need words. Take this gift instead. With the shade wavering tremulously above, he gazed into her eyes and felt himself falling slowly. When he awoke, he was dusted with flower petals. He felt stronger. Despite lacking a voice, he knew his own mind.
