Mermaid Subspecies
In regions near the expansive aquatic cities where the Maren dwell, being a dragon is dangerous business. However, some have had luck surviving in such areas due to their colouring. From a reasonable distance, a purple and ivory coloured dragon with wings that blend into the sea itself is often mistaken by Maren as one of their own. Natural selection in areas with a high concentration of Maren has caused an abundance of "mermaid" dragons to call those spaces home.

Mermaids often live in large groups along the coast of any flight territory, especially but not exclusively on the outer ocean side where there aren't Water clans to endanger Maren settlements. They lay their eggs on land, but do most of their work deep below the waves, fishing, foraging, and smuggling Maren technology out from under the noses of their namesakes. Even non Water flight Mermaids tend to be gifted with the ability to master waterbreathing magic, and they are known for their haunting songs and dances.
