Biography
GENB IMPERIAL
So let’s talk about the idea of bottleneck-bred dragons aka genB.
Start with 32 (25) unrelated, unbred dragons. Pair them off and breed each pair once. Pick one offspring from each nest, exalt the parents and any surplus kids (this step is important!) and then pair off the 16 (24) dragons. Breed, choose one offspring from each nest, exalt everything else, and so on.
Key step: exalting siblings to prevent breeding, exalting parents after their first and only nest to prevent additional breeding.
Eventually you’ll breed the last 2 dragons. All the kids in the resulting nest are 5+ generations removed from all other non-exalted dragons on the site. These genB dragons can breed with any other dragon on the site.
So what? Well, we all know a key perk of gen1 dragons: they can breed with aaaaanyone. But you can’t acquire your chosen breed/color/gene combo on-demand, barring your custom progenitor. And some things are flat-out impossible to get a gen1 of these days: imperials are effectively impossible to scroll. Wildclaws aren’t great either, now that scrolls aren’t available on-demand from the Marketplace. Not to mention the raw cost if you want a bunch of pricey genes for your new project– jellybean-circuit isn’t cheap when you apply all three scrolls yourself.
Plus, what do you do if your desired Highly Specific Color Combo flat-out doesn’t exist, or isn’t available for sale?
Bottleneck-bred dragons have a number of obvious downsides: choose between crazy-high initial lair space cost OR the entire project taking even longer as you start it in phases. You also need to do check the initiators for inbreeding– among ALL of them. Even if none of that bothers you, this is a project for the patient: If you booned every single nest and bred each generation on the same day, it would still take 75+ days to hatch a genB plentiful nest.
All that said: you have control over the element, starting genes, breeds and colors. If you’re desperate to breed something Very Exact, start with some reasonably close fodder and keep picking the closest options each round. If you like gambling, load up on some cheap AH fodder and see what you get. As long as you’re careful to buy unbred dragons and exalt extra siblings ASAP and parents as soon as you’re done with them, you’ll end up with something that might as well be a gen1 for how wide its mating options are.
Potential genB projects:
•Something which could not be a gen1 project due to scroll limits (ex: imperials)
•New blood for a particular color/breed/gene combo that suffers from most specimens being closely related
•Equivalent to gen1 project for players with more time/patience (breeding) than money (scrolls)
