Though the Windsinger is the lord of the skies and the keeper of the open air, Cardea knows that the winds have a life of their own. How else should she explain the way they dance and sing? How else can she justify their whispers, their shouts? Maybe they do not live and breathe in the way the dragons of Sornieth do, but there is life in them yet, a belief she will not shake

It's the product of years among them, twisting along the currents with her wings spread wide. Every updraft that's ever carried her, every gale that's tried to tear her down, each has brimmed with heart and soul that some dragons simply aren't lucky enough to see. She understands that it's hard since it requires so much listening, so much stillness at first, neither of which she is especially good at, but oh, the winds are worth the effort.

She's never happier than when she's gliding through the skies, letting the breeze carry her where it will. There's a thrill to wandering Sornieth on the whims of little more than a puff of air, something that sparks a light in her heart. Part of it is because she met her beloved familiar this way. Her Wind Sprite was one moment a flutter in the distance, and the next, a passenger on her journey. Perched on her shoulder as she rode the wind farther and farther from home, it whispered in her ear all the things the wind wished to say, all the joys and sorrows it carried, all the dreams it bore onward. The sprite begged her to glide, to simply be, and in that fashion, taught her to understand the sky her patron deity adores so fully.

And that sprite also brought her to Ulalume, where she was appointed the Wind Ambassador of the Court of the Eleven. It was quite the formal title, as well as something of a shock at first. Before, Cardea had not considered herself leadership material. Decision-making was not her strong suit, nor was narrow direction. Thankfully, though, that was not what the little town needed.

Instead, Ulalume needed joy. It required something worth working for, something worth building towards. What was the point of taking chances in the dark if there was no heart behind the risk? Why not be sure there was something worth striving for, even against the odds?

Admittedly, Amontillado Casino is not what she originally had in mind, but it'll certainly do.

Gambling has its own appeals to Cardea. While not a frequent visitor to Ulalume's primary attraction, she does visit now and again just to let chance take her where it will. Her mate, Juno, doesn't see the benefits besides spending the night at her side, but she loves the way the cards shuffle and the wheels spin, loves the thrill of not knowing where this will take her next.

And even better, she likes to donate her winnings to the town. As part of the Court of the Eleven, she is all but guaranteed a comfortable, respected existence. Other dragons, though, are not always so lucky, and she feels deeply for them. Sometimes, chance doesn't work out. Instead of lifting someone up, it drags them through the mud, merciless and cold. They should not be left there, though, and Cardea makes every effort to help them. Ulalume should be a town of joy, whether it's the joy of winning against the house in Amontillado, or the joy of having a warm, safe place to sleep at last.

That said, sometimes she saves a little something for Juno. A new crystal terrarium, perhaps, or earrings made of shimmery pearls. The gifts she lavishes on her mate are whatever strikes her in the moment, whatever feels right with the wind, and sometimes, they seem strange. But she cannot turn away from the joy in Juno's heart. It lights up her entire world, warms even the coldest nights, and she craves it constantly. So rarely does she have consistent desires, the first time she realized she never wanted Juno's love to wane was a shock? That is the simple truth of it, though, and she would not trade it for the world.

So Cardea does her utmost to bring chance and cheer to Ulalume, through whatever acts strike her at the moment. Whatever whisper of misery reaches her, she does her best to dispel, and beside her bed, she keeps a list of problems she's not yet solved, lest her mind wanders and forget them all. It's a trick from Juno, who has never worried much about her own memory, and so far, it seems to be serving the dragons of Ulalume quite well.

Plus, Cardea never forgets her anniversary with Juno anymore.
